GENERATION SYSTEMS Guinard Energies combines hydrokinetic turbines and solar panels into hybrid electricity generation systems including conversion devices


A highly efficient Megawatt blue turbine is becoming a commercial reality by combining PV panels and battery storage into a hybrid system. The company combines renewable energy resources to offer smart-grid solutions, which is more and more important as over 1 billion people worldwide live without electricity grid access.


SOLAR AND HYDROKINETIC POWER – COMPLEMENTARY RESOURCES For the last ten years, the cost of PV installation has dropped. Nevertheless, PV renewable resources are highly variable and require a large storage capacity for off-grid applications. Hybrid systems combine the continuous production of a hydrokinetic turbine to ensure base load production and stability of the mini-grid. The storage size can be reduced and battery lifetime increased, to prevent major discharge.


In subtropical areas for instance, the use of hydrokinetic power and solar panels combined may be the answer to seasonal resource variations.

INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES FOR OFF-GRID AREAS The use of current turbines in hybrid systems optimise the energy management of multi-source renewable energy production. This smart-grid fits any island situation. Recently improvements on conversion and control have been tested and are now ready for industrial deployment.


For example, a single 3.5kW P66 hydrokinetic turbine only needs 1.5m water depth for installation and works between 1 to 3.5m/s of current velocity. At 2.5m/s, this 100-kg device and 66cm diameter turbine supplies 20MWh annually.


Ten kW power system will be delivered by 2018. The first hybrid system combining energy management system, solar panels, batteries and hydrokinetic turbines will be deployed in overseas territories.

on modular systems and scalable technology. The Guinard Energies hydrokinetic turbine has been designed to fit with several mounting positions: under a pontoon, supported by a floating system, attached to a bridge, or even on the seabed with a gravity base foundation.


FUTURE DEVELOPMENT In 2018, the company will enlarge its range of hydrokinetic turbine through a bigger hybrid production system generating an electricity production of 100 kW.
