FEATURE SPONSOR
A PIONEERING PUBLIC
ACTOR IN MARINE ENERGIES Morbihan Energies is a public institution regrouping all the towns in the Morbihan and who specialises in the field of energy including networks, production, distribution and development of pilots
Since 2012, the departmental energy union of Morbihan has assessed the potential for mobilising local energy resources, in partnership with the government departments, the University of South Brittany and the chambers of agriculture and industry. Thus, several resources could be investigated, such as photovoltaic and solar thermal, biomass methanisation and wood energy. The Morbihan has a coastal fringe of several hundred kilometers and officials wanted to study the energy potential of the marine space bordering the Morbihan coastline.
HYDROLOGY STUDY
In 2014, a first characterisation of the potential hydrology study was conducted with the support of the University of South Brittany. Sabella,
the first Breton company to immerse a tidal turbine connected to the ground, was associated, as an expert, with the Steering Committee of the study. The characterisation study resulted in: » the ability of the sites studied to receive production facilities,
» a potential for electricity production that can cover nearly 10% of the electricity consumption of the inhabitants bordering the Gulf of Morbihan (130,000 inhabitants).
FINDINGS
Based on these findings, Morbihan Energies continued its investigations by launching a second phase of study on the environmental context of the Gulf of Morbihan and on the societal apprehension of a potential future hydroelectric project in the
Gulf. This second phase is ongoing and conclusions are expected at the beginning of 2018.
TURBINE (D3)
In parallel to this study, an exhibition and four conferences took place during the period from April to June in Arzon (located at the southern entrance of the Gulf of Morbihan). More than 2,500 people visited the showroom and attended the conferences on renewable marine energies. For this event, Sabella graciously made available the turbine (D3) which was used for the tests carried out in the Odet river in 2008, contributing to the wide success of this event.
