SABELLA D10 TIDAL TURBINE PROJECT:A FIRST IN FRANCE!

The Sabella D10 tidal turbine, was deployed in June 2015 in the Fromveur passage, south of Ushant Island (Brittany, Western France) at a depth of 55 metres

The power cable, connected to the shore in two phases - cable lay then connection to the Sabella D10 turbine - was installed by the Argonaute, a Bourbon vessel.

PIONEERS

Pioneers in the towing and installation of the first floating wind turbine off the coast of Portugal in 2011, Bourbon remains committed to the renewable energy market as illustrated by its support to Sabella.

The ultimate goal of this project is to connect the first tidal turbine to the French electricity grid.

TURNKEY SERVICE

“For this project, Bourbon provided a turnkey service including project management and installation

engineering of the submarine cable from land shore to subsea laydown of the end connector,” underlines Patrick Belenfant, Senior Vice President Subsea Services.

The 2km long, 68mm diameter power cable supplied by Sabella was laid from the beach to a 60m water depth in the Fromveur Passage to Ushant. The cable laying was a critical phase due to the specific environmental conditions, in particular very strong currents and tidal effects in the area.

RESOURCES The resources for this operation were: the Argonaute, a Bourbon vessel equipped with a dynamic positioning system, a ROV to perform visual inspections and an air diving team to assist the cable laying. The team on

board the vessel was comprised of more than 30 experienced and skilled professionals including engineers, seafarers, divers and ROV pilots.

The short section of power cable from the underwater turbine and the main power cable were connected on the vessel deck with a specific surface junction box provided by Sabella.

CLOSE COLLABORATION Strong currents and short working periods at low or high tide made this operation very challenging. The successful delivery of this project was enabled by a close collaboration between the Sabella and Bourbon teams.
