SPOTLIGHT ON WESTERN FRANCE

FEATURE SPONSOR

ISLAND INNOVATION

Akuo Energy is the leading French independent renewable energy power producer and is present across the whole value chain, including project development, financing, construction and operation

As at the end of 2016, the company had invested €1.9 billion for a total capacity of 960MW in assets in operation and under construction and over 2GW in projects under development. The Group’s electricity sales by the same date totalled over €172 million.

Headquartered in Paris, the Group has over 260 employees and operates in 12 countries around the world. Akuo Energy is targeting 3,500MW in total generating capacity by 2022.

ISLAND INNOVATION For Akuo Energy, innovation begins on islands—fragile and exposed locations that are sentinels of climate change. As part of its island-based strategy, the company aims to overcome the shortage of land. Island environments usually carry severe constraints, with

land a precious commodity in great demand that has to be shared. These constraints include remoteness, the lack of fuel fossil resources, high electricity costs and no high-power grids on hand.

Akuo Energy’s solution was to develop a competitive power mix in these island territories. The PHARES project implemented with Sabella on the island of Ouessant is a prime example of this.

THREE GOALS

The close partnership forged by Sabella and Akuo Energy on Ouessant has three goals. The first is to provide the hydro turbine solution developed by Sabella with a technological showcase, at its very source in the Finistère department, that demonstrates the effectiveness and usefulness of harnessing marine currents.

Secondly, it is intended to lead the qualification process for the first integrated multi-energy model (hydro turbine, wind and photovoltaic energy), which represents the future of energy solutions in island environments.

Lastly, this partnership aims to show the way forward by highlighting the role that energy storage will play in off- grid networks. Thanks to the batteries deployed in the project, PHARES’ goal is to raise the percentage of renewable energy generated on the island relative to its consumption from 0% to over 70%. This demanding objective has cemented the exemplary partnership between Sabella’s and Akuo Energy’s teams.
