SPOTLIGHT ON WESTERN FRANCE DEDICATED TO INNOVATION
Technopôle Brest-Iroise is one of the seven business support organisations dedicated to innovation in Brittany
Created in 1988, it aims at supporting the creation and development of innovative businesses. Due to Brest’s history and the presence of strong academic and industry assets in Brest, the marine sector, including the renewable energy area, is of specific interest.
This interest was embodied by the support to the Sabella company from the beginning of 2000. Other examples of interest to Technopôle Brest-Iroise within the marine renewable energy area have been to support the creation of the French competitiveness cluster (Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique) from 2004 and supporting the creation of the Institute for Energy transition dedicated to Marine Renewable Energies (France Energies
Marines) from 2010. Both organisations are located in Brest.
EUROPEAN PROGRAMMES In parallel and because the marine energy solutions can’t be found alone, Technopôle Brest-Iroise decided to get involved in European programmes, notably with a strong cooperation with the United Kingdom.
MERIFIC PROJECT
It got involved in the ‘Merific’ project conducted between 2011 and 2014 by the Cornwall Council. It was aimed at creating the conditions to the successful implementation of marine renewable energies in Brittany and Cornwall in several different aspects: knowledge
of the wind/wave/tide resources, regulations, industry involvement and social acceptation.
ICE
Following the success of this project, Technopôle Brest-Iroise, together with Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique took the initiative to develop a new project (currently running, and led by Bretagne Développement Innovation) called ICE Intelligent Community Energy. Based on the Sabella tidal technology off Ushant island, the project objective is to encourage the creation of business consortia able to answer energy issues of isolated territories such as islands.
