56 The Post • Antiques Going back to our childhood

in Dartmouth after a recent valuation morning, I realised that it’s those small things that can be a pleasant surprise in life as well as at auction. Rather than the more traditional large pieces of furniture or chintzy pieces of porcelain, the last of the pre-millennials (certainly those born in the 1970s) are going back to their childhood. For example, I can remember seeing re-runs of Felix the Cat cartoons on a Saturday morning, so easily recognisable; the original black plush toy here would be worth £80-£120*. The fact that it has been 40 years since Star Wars

S

was released in the cinema has increased the demand and value

for original toys and collectables immensely. This mint condition No 1 of the UK published Star Wars comic still has the press-out X-Wing fighter, so should attract a lot of attention at auction. It is also the

things that we have hidden away in attics and cupboards that can often be very surprising once brought to light again. This silver

topped walking cane with dog’s head terminal was

presented in 1905 to C R Roberts, Chairman of Tottenham Hotspur Football & Athletics

Club, so you can imagine

any passionate fan would easily be tempted by the

£500-£700* estimate for an early item from the clubs history. Perhaps one of the most intriguing pieces is the Dunhill Aquarium table lighter from the 1930s. This particular version has a different array of tropical fish and could see it double or possibly treble its pre–sale estimate of £800-£1,200* on the day.
