When do you start and finish your day? I usually start work at 7.30am and finish around seven in the evening, although some meetings go on until 10pm. There are always more emails when you get home! From Monday to Friday every minute is work. I travel up

to London during the evenings for meetings the following day. Weekends often involve some element of work too.

What do you do during your lunch break? I grab a sandwich at the computer.

What do you like most about working in education? Feeling that you are doing a worthwhile job and having a worthwhile impact on people’s lives. I say it’s the opposite

What would you have done if you hadn’t been a teacher? I think I may have quite enjoyed being a politician, hope- fully making a difference to people’s lives.

What do you listen to in the car? Radio 4, unless it’s irritating me and people are pontificat- ing nonsense and making criticisms about things with no evidence! Then I switch to Radio 3 for some light relief.

What is your role at Kingsbridge Community College? I work as part of the business man- agement team for Education South West, a multi-academy trust of ten schools including Kingsbridge. I’m based at Kingsbridge and travel between all ten schools. I oversee marketing, resources and procurement in addition to being actively involved in a number of wide-ranging projects across all sites. I co-ordinate open days and educational events and I am very passionate about the work I do and the impact it has.

How long have you been at the college? I’ve worked here for about 22 years having initially worked in the school’s library as a library and resources assistant. I then became Head of Reprographics and Resources, and later Head of Information and Learning Services. I’ve been working with Academies South West, comprising six schools (Kingsbridge

Community College, Dartmouth Academy, Blackawton, East Allington, Kingswear and Stoke Fleming Primary Schools), for three years. In January this year we merged

with the Templar Trust, comprising Coombeshead Academy, Teign School and Rydon and Christow Primaries, to form Education South West. It has been amazing to see the ‘family’ of schools growing!

How does being a part of Edu- cation South West benefit the school? With multi-academy trusts there are many different advantages and of course it’s ultimately about ensuring the children get the best possible experience.

Outstanding teachers, who are passionate about their subjects, can share best practice and resources across all the schools. This helps to maximize the service we provide and helps the children to flourish. As school is such an important part of a child’s life, we strive to provide them with the best opportunities to learn and develop. It’s been tough in education with recent government cuts and balancing finances. Forming multi- academy trusts allows all the schools to share their services and make savings by having an increased combined buying power, which helps to provide a consistent standard of education and ensures that as much funding as possible goes into areas that directly influences the children’s experiences and opportunities.

What’s best and worst about working in education? The highs definitely outweigh the lows. Every day is different. It’s so lovely to visit the schools and see the staff so passionate about children and education, in addition to being
