Now is the time of year to start thinking about planting ahead for spring colour. A little forward planning now can pay off hugely later and planting bulbs is the easiest way to do it.

Bulbs can generally be purchased from the end of August and can be planted from September, though tulips are best left for November time. Every year there are new varieties to try along with the old favourites. Daffodils, tulips and crocus come from warmer climes and require a sunny (though around three hours a day will suffi ce), well drained site to thrive. Daffodils mostly originate from Spain and Portugal and tulips from Asia.

Narcissus (daffodils), come in many sizes and are classed in ten divisions, such as large cupped, trumpet and double blooms. Miniature varieties such as ‘Tete-a-Tete’ are lovely planted in pots and tend to withstand the winds and rain more than the taller more traditional ones.

The miniature varieties, along with Paperwhite daffodils and prepared hyacinths, are perfect for ‘forcing’ into fl ower for Christmas. Paperwhites take around 10 weeks to fl ower. Most require a period of cool and dark before being brought indoors.

Bulbs are now available to buy at Chestnut Nursery. We will be having a special Autumn Plant Sale on Saturday 16th September from 8am-3pm. There will be lots of bargains and Autumn is an ideal time to plant for next year.

See you soon.
