District Councillor Report

I was honoured to have been made Chairman of East Dorset District Council earlier this year and I would like to extend my thanks to those who have made contact to extend their congratulations.

Accompanied by my wife Janet, I have been busy across the district, attending and supporting a wide variety of events. I would also like to congratulate my fellow Corfe Mullen District Councillor, Paul Harrison, on becoming Chairman of the Parish Council.

This month I would like to touch on the subject of doorstep criminals, who often target the vulnerable or elderly and exploit people by convincing them to pay for shoddy or incomplete repair work, charging extortionate fees for their services, or threatening residents who do not pay. Thankfully doorstep crime is low in Dorset, however, over recent months we have seen cases in Christchurch and East Dorset. The Community Safety Team and Neighbourhood Policing Teams will be arranging street corner meetings over the next few weeks to raise awareness about Doorstep Crime. However they will not get to all areas, so have asked Councillors to help to get the messages out to as many residents as possible. The message to give residents is: ‘Good neighbours stop rogue traders’ by encouraging us all to look out for those more at risk to Doorstep Crime. If you do see one of the team, they will be distributing ‘We do not deal with uninvited traders’ and ‘No cold calling’ door stickers and other leafl ets from Trading Standards.

That’s it for now Cllr Derek Burt
