LIVELINE I
’ll be off to Epic Studioson the 1st to brush up
on Cotswold post- hardcore punk band Milk Teeth. Now signed to Roadrunner Records, the band debut their EP Be Nice. A possible volte-face from last year’s Vile Child album?
Emma O’Reilly makes the journey from County Galway to Norwich’s Bicycle Shop on the 2nd. She has drawn comparisons to Kate Bush, Tori Amos and Regina Spektor, who I believe are also keen cyclists.
Te Gunton Festival of Food and Music this year features Kitty, Daisy & Lewis as well as local acts including Sink Ya Teeth and Te Vagaband. It is at Te Gunton Arms in Torpe Market on the 5th.
Black Shuk, Time For 15, Vaudevue and Te Renedeans are all set to appear at Te B2 on the 7th. Original bands playing original music. At Norwich’s alternative venue. On Sprowston Road.
It is Sonic Youth’s 3rd Birthday party at Norwich Arts Centre on the 9th. Pay What You Can, and enjoy Peach Club, We’ll Be Detectives, Hydra Lerma, Finn Doherty and Flora. Bring a cake and a card.
It’s an AFO Takeover! (Tat is ‘Access the Future at Open’) organised by Access to Music, Future Radio and Open on the 12th. Featuring eight acts across two stages, expect the likes of local bands Te Meeks, Dog Fight and Gentlemen.
Take your Granny Smiths along to Te B2 on the 14th when pop- folk quartet Apples I’m Home prepare a catchy crumble of melody driven songs. Described as ‘Te Mamas and Papas meet Mumford & Sons’. I’ll have a glass or two of cider at that one.
Te 11th annual Brickfest takes over Te Brickmakers for all day, Bank Holiday Monday, on the 28th. With 38 bands over 3 stages, as well as lots to eat, drink and do, this
THE BEST LIVE MUSIC FOR THE MONTHS AHEAD
Squeezing a quart into a pint pot, they call this. Or used to, before the metric system turned pints into litres, quarts into 0.25’s, and pot into something you could order from an Amsterdam café. My challenge, therefore, is to shoehorn the pick of eight weeks’ live gigs into my regular column of inches (sorry, centimetres). Well, here goes, starting with August...
year’s event is raising money for Sprowston Infant School’s sensory garden.
Talented South Norfolk singer Breeze Redwine celebrates her EP release at Te Garage on the 31st, together with Kolin Durier, Grant Ley and Lisa Redford. And it’s two days before her 15th birthday. I suddenly feel very old indeed.
I
nto September we go with Sundown Festival ripping
up the Royal Norfolk Showground from the 1st to the 3rd. Te fun starts on Friday night for those camping, the rest of us have to wait until Saturday for the likes of Craig David and Rag’N’Bone Man, and Sunday for Pendulum and You Me At Six. Oh, and I almost forgot. Little Mix play Earlham Park on the 3rd.
Former bass player with Te Ramones, C.J.Ramone visits Te Owl Sanctuary on the 6th, together with Canadian punk band
Te Isotopes adding atomic weight to the evening.
Celebrating 40 years as a band, Te Psychedelic Furs arrive at Te Nick Rayns LCR on the 11th. Still led by brothers Richard and Tim Butler after re-forming in 2001, the Furs perform many of their hits, including Pretty in Pink. Dress accordingly.
California’s Rainbow Girls bring their own brand of harmony- centric psychedelic folk to Eaton Park Café on the 13th. You won’t need an umbrella, but you will need a ticket. Tis one is not entry by ‘hat donation’.
Tis Town Ain’t Big Enough For Te Both Of Us was a big hit in 1974. I was living in Lowestoft at the time. Shortly afterwards I moved to Norwich. Sparks get a chance to finally catch up with me when they play Te Waterfront on the 18th.
Tose who caught Te Jesus & Mary Chain’s set at Latitude will have been reminded
just how good tracks from Psychocandy and Darklands still sound thirty years on. Catch Jim and William Reid and the band when they play the Nick Rayns LCR on the 19th.
Deepdale Festival takes place at Deepdale Backpackers & Camping from the 22nd to the 24th. Enjoy the likes of Jess Morgan and Matt Watson playing in this beautiful North Norfolk location.
We are all heading to the seaside on the 30th, to Lowestoft’s Claremont Pier to see Te Libertines. For those of you that don’t know Lowestoft, the Claremont is the one that is further south than the South Pier. I never could work that one out, and I was born there.
So there you have it. Two months of local live music to take you cavorting towards Autumn. I’ll meet you in October, in plenty of time for even more musical Trick or Treats.
