NORWICH BODY ART FESTIVAL 2017 PHOTOS

What’s the scene like in Bordeaux? In Bordeaux the tattoo scene isn’t so big. Tere are not so many heavily tattooed people or even that many studios. Since being here for the past year my style, on request, has become more “graphic”.... I don’t get to do as much colour as before. Tat’s fine for me as I like to change my style up a bit. As long as you’re asking me to do something a bit different, I’m a happy lady.

TONI-LOU @ Tetrodon

When did you first begin tattooing? I first started tattooing in Gorleston back in 2002. After getting to know Joe and Marty at my local studio by getting my own piercings/tattoos done, they gave me a job after years of me asking! I started on the reception desk and cleaning, then piercing, then eventually tattooing. I was only 18 so I was very lucky to get into it at such an early age. How have you developed your own unique style? I never really had my own style until recently. I was taught to tattoo anything and everything that came in the door, whether that was a tribal dolphin, Japanese sleeve or a portrait of someone! I think it’s a good thing to be an “all-rounder” in this industry. Styles come and go but if you can put clean lines and solid work in the skin then you’re set. In 2007 I left England to travel

and work around Asia and Australia. It was in Melbourne that I was first asked what my style was. Up until then I never even thought about it, but through that chance I started to do more photo- realistic work. A few years later I left Australia, but not wanting to return to the UK. I moved to Berlin, Germany. For whatever reason, no one wanted realistic work and my style changed to “neo-traditional” (a new old-school style: still with strong lines and heavy shading but with more details and wider range of colours). Tis is the style I love and still like to say I specialize in! Your favorite ever tattoo? Tat’s a tough question. I’ve been tattooing now for 15 years so to choose one isn’t possible, it depends! Like asking someone to choose their favorite song! But a recent fave was on a client that

traveled to me in France from Germany. I tattooed a wolf and osprey - the design was huge! His whole chest over two days and then he got in a car and drove back. It’s always a pleasure to tattoo people that make such a journey just to get tattooed by me. Tis story is extra special as the

last time I had tattooed this client (the year previously in Berlin) he was female and it had only been two months since his surgery. He was the first person he’d shown his chest to and after we’d finished we had a little moment where he thanks me for helping him get the chest he always wanted. Tat’s a great feeling, those clients. Te ones where it goes beyond “just a tattoo”. You can help people. I do a lot of scar cover ups, whether mastectomy or self harm or even just covering up old tattoos, there is a special something in helping people feel better about themselves through my work. Te most unusual?! Well, maybe you can’t print this! But I’ve tattooed INSIDE some female private parts.... or Mr Burns getting a BJ from Smithers is another personal fave! How does it feel to be tattooed? Describing how a tattoo feels like is very hard, even after you’ve been tattooed - everyone has a different pain threshold, the pain varies a lot on different parts of the body and even some tattooers can be more “heavy handed” than others. So it’s hard to describe exactly, but something like a hot, annoying scratch. If you can relax, keep breathing, rest well and eat before your appointment you’ll be fine. Taking some sweets for that extra sugar hit is always a good idea to keep your glucose up!

POPPY SMALL HANDS @ Ink Addiction

How did you first get into tattoos? I just hung around a shop, watching and learning from the age of 14 when I got my first piercing. I got to know the guys at the shop and became friends. Tey slowly started giving me more responsibilities; just bookings, promotion, constant cleaning, etc. I did that for a few years and improved on my drawing. Tey then offered me an apprenticeship at the age of 18 and the rest is history! Was it hard to develop your own particular style? Yes and no. I feel like the work I produce comes naturally to me, therefore my particular style is just usually how I’m expressing my interest in art at the time. I tattoo and I paint, and both are actually quite different styles to each other. All I wanted to get from tattooing for myself is to always be able to recognize my work as my own, and I feel like I have achieved that personal goal. Which other tattoo artists do you admire, and why? I admire SO MANY! Particularly many artists in Norwich. I admire

my work colleagues, Ross and Dennis, and most of the work on my body is by my good friend Brad who works at Rag and Bone. I have had so much inspiration from Mark Jelliman and Xed leHead. I have been tattooed at a few Norwich shops, so the artists there are always people who I look up to. Tere are many online inspirations too, I follow hundreds of artists from around the world. I’m inspired by everything and everyone I see in many different ways. What’s the scene like right here in Norwich right now? Amazing. So many great artists, and such a good community. I feel I could always ask pretty much any artist in Norwich for help if I needed guidance. So, thank you for being so great, fellow Norwich artists! How can people go about booking a time to get a tattoo with you at NBAF? I am not actually taking bookings! I will taking walk-ins all day on Sunday. Feel free to pop by and have a chat and a look at what’s going on!

How can we go about getting a tattoo by you? I’m already fully booked the Saturday at the convention but Sunday is left open for “walk-ups” of my own pre-drawn designs .I’m also tattooing at Te Black Sheep the week before.
