NORWICH BODY ART FESTIVAL 2017 SHOPPING

The vince ray experience

Voodoo. Tattoos. Rock n Roll. Sex. And bone china dinner services. Tey don’t usually make a good fit, but Paul and Vince from Te Vince Ray Experience have made it their mission to offer their magnificent and super cool wares to tattoo fans both online and at tattoo conventions. I had a chat with Paul to find out where it all began and what he likes most about being a part of NBAF.

What is the Vince Ray Experience and how did it start? Back in the early 90’s I was creating fake tattoos for the film industry, like for Robert de Niro in Cape Fear. I met Vince, an artist, at a magazine office where I was having a meeting. I offered him a lift home, and we hung out and bwecame friends. We were both going to fetish clubs at the time, and I wanted to find a way to help him to get his art noticed as it was so good. We started by him designing some fake tattoos that we sold at fetish clubs for a couple of quid. Ten we came up with the idea of making bone china with designs on, and before we knew it we had orders for 400 mugs. What do you consider to be the coolest things you are selling at the moment, and what are the most popular items? We sell full dinner services of bone china with blue tattoo designs on that are great and really sell well. We also sell salt and pepper shakers that say Heroin and Cocaine on. We are the last manufacturers of ashtrays in the UK because you’re not allowed to smoke indoors anymore except for in your own home, and a lot of people vape now. So they are often used for other purposes, like for sweets or a hamster’s water pot! You must be witness to some incredible skin art on your travels…what’s the best or most unusual tattoo you’ve ever seen? About 15 years ago I saw a guy who had a black tattoo of a dragon that started at his foot and went all the way round his

body, ending on his neck. I thought I hope he doesn’t get any more tattoos because it would ruin this magnificent one. But I see so many wonderful tattoos these days…it’s really come out from the back streets onto the high streets and there are loads of brilliant young artists doing well. You don’t really see bad tattoos anymore! What are the best aspects of tattoo conventions? For me it’s a chance to catch up with other stall holders and tattoo artists who are my friends and acquaintances. I often travel with Perry who runs Total Tattoo Magazine (based in Norwich) and we go all over Europe and the UK. You’ve been at NBAF since the beginning. How do you think it has changed? Well, it used to be at St Andrews Hall which was a great venue. It’s become bigger and more excited every year really.

Can you tell me a bit about the Mr Beardy competition that you run at NBAF? It’s something I first saw at Te Trip Out efestival, where I actually won myself! I decided to take it to lots of tattoo shows, especially as there are lots of bearded tattoo fans out there these days. It‘s a lot of fun – I get three girls on stage to shortlist the entries, and then the crowd decides on the winner, and prizes are donated by some of the stallholders.
