A message to our readers: Te times, they are a-changing.
Long before we all started turning the camera lens back on ourselves, back in a time when you could simply go for a Nandos without it being cheeky, Outline was delivering a monthly compendium of Norwich’s social scene to all your favourite haunts. Limewire was at the cutting edge of digital music and the closest thing we had to Siri was the Microsoft paperclip.
Yes, for 16 years we’ve interviewed all the ‘next big things’ (ever heard of Arctic Monkeys or, I dunno, Ed Sheeran), old big things (Public Enemy, anyone, or Johnny Marr) and all of Norwich’s big things - the sights, sounds and city-dwellers that make it such fine place to be.
16 years in free, independent magazine terms is like dog years. Tanks to incredible support from our advertisers - some from day one - we’ve weathered the storms and braced for battle each month, but as some of the local businesses have taken a knock, so have we.
Te long and short of it is that producing a free monthly printed publication just doesn’t stack up any more.
We are two people in an office, supported by the unending passion of our volunteer writers and photographers, so with no big corporation behind us, funding or financial backers, we have to make some changes.
So what’s the future for Outline?
Tis copy will serve as a joint issue for August and September, then the next one will be a joint October/November/December issue. After that? Our hope is that we can produce a quarterly edition that’s bumper-packed full of enough print fodder to keep you informed, satiated and having a giggle for three months at a time.
All 18,000+ pages of
Outlineonline.co.uk will continue to exist, and be added to daily – don’t fret, all those brilliant live music, cinema, theatre, food, comedy and album reviews will still be your lunchbreak fodder. We’ll also continue to send out our weekly e-newsletter each Friday, with the best of the previous week and the best of next week’s events at a glance. If you haven’t already, give us a follow on the usual suspect social platforms, cos we’ll be making a noise online. You can keep the Outline app firmly on your phone an’ all, as the city’s essential listings will continue to be added, and of course, sign up to the newsletter on our website.
