Music & Arts Festival 2017
This year’s Community Art: Music and Arts Festival (from 3rd-16th July) was very busy, with lots going on in Upton and involving many parts of the community.
• The Loose Ladies of Upton have been knitting fl oral bunting to add lots of colour around the town.
• The Upton Methodist and Ladybird Pre-school children have also been very artistic in painting bunting for use around the churches.
• The Upton Junior and Infant Schools have decorated the crown to celebrate the Queen’s Sapphire Jubilee and our Carnival team has been busy decorating around the town in preparation for the big event of the year, the Carnival.
• We have been involved in the Gardening Club’s 75th Anniversary celebrations and our local artists, Gary Lucas, Barbara Evans and Muriel Griffi n, created an amazing mural depicting the club over the 75 years. It has now been placed behind the clock tower.
Our fi rst event of the week was an afternoon of music
Next was an afternoon at Upton Infant School where Carolyn Corr and I had a lovely time decorating a crown with the children of both our schools,
having fun
using a selection of amazing materials from the Scrap Store.
The fi nale of the week was the all day Art and Music Festival event in the Church and Community
Centre, which were kindly donated to us free of charge, and it is their major contribution that enables us to bring the community together to enjoy Art and Music.
This year we were lucky to have such an array of art and photography to exhibit and I think a few people went home with some
beautiful paintings and photographs.
at Waypoints Care Home with delicious cream
scones – a very special
afternoon where we joined in with the residents to enjoy the music provided by our local talent. Each year the Festival is very fortunate to have performers who volunteer their talent and time to bring the best entertainment to the community – and this year was no exception. We had our very own professional singer, Liz Ferrie, singing with audience participation and I think we sang the best Que Sera Sera ever.
The Sapphire Choir also performed with lots of humour, including our laughing policeman who popped out of the choir and had the audience in stitches. Last but not least we had Calvin Billington-Glen who, at sixteen, entertained us with a selection of music – but I think his Elvis songs were the favourite with the residents. Thank you to everyone taking part – without you the Arts Festival wouldn’t happen.

The music in the
Church was outstanding, with the
Citrus Choir led by Tim Dowland, and ‘Curtain Up Productions’
singing from their spring show, together with Calvin, Robin and Brian.
A big thank you to everybody that helped us bring another successful Arts Week to the community, and thanks too for the wonderful features in your front gardens.
