The Keep Upton Tidy Group conducted a litter pick on Monday 3rd July just before the judging of Upton in Bloom. We work closely with Upton in Bloom and are hopeful they get a high rating as they have for many years, which refl ects the wonderful efforts they make in beautifying our town.
We found that generally the state of the area was good to very good, but with some inevitable litter thoughtlessly dropped. A couple of specifi c problems were identifi ed. First it was noticed that a very large number of cigarette butts were dropped everywhere. Not being a smoker I am sure I do not appreciate the diffi culties of disposing of such litter, but would ask our citizens who do smoke to responsibly dispose of cellophane, packets and butts as this would help us maintain a pleasant environment for everyone.
Another problem was found at the Community Centre, where an Air Ambulance donation skip is situated. A number of bags are being left with inappropriate contents, which is making the area look very unsightly. It is appreciated that regular collection is one issue and we will be in touch with the charity. However, meanwhile let us make sure we only leave what is requested and dispose of any other rubbish at the local tip or through the recycling process.
The next meeting of the Keep Upton Tidy Group will be at 6pm on Wednesday 2nd August at the Council Offi ces at Morland Way, after which we will be announcing our Autumn Litter Pick day. Please note this is a change of venue. If anyone would like to attend they would be most welcome. Please contact us to make sure we are aware you are coming and to ensure access to the meeting room. Just to confi rm we are always delighted to see new faces even as a one-off to see what we do or bring up a litter concern. Meanwhile thanks to all those who have been looking after their areas or making sure litter gets to a bin.
Finally we would ask residents to be vigilant and advise the above named offi cers of any litter, fl y- tipping, dog fouling or overgrown pathways (or bins that have not been emptied) and we will do our best to resolve the problem.
