Four of the region’s largest quoted companies all showed good share price rises during May, headed by Newbury-based Vodafone Group, the multi-national telecommunications company, with a rasping 16% hike.

“Improving customer service is our top priority,” said Pete Marsh, head of sales central operations and UK retail. “The retail leadership team and I have been working hard to ensure our customers have the best experience possible when visiting one of our 459 stores. Our efforts are paying off – our latest in- store figures show customer satisfaction is at an all-time high. And last week we were

named Best High Street Retailer at the Mobile Industry Awards.”

The Slough company Reckitt Benckiser, producer of health, hygiene and home products, also saw a healthy 13% rise. Earlier this year it acquired Mead Johnson for a total of $17.9 billion, which it described as a “significant step forward in RB’s journey as a global leader in consumer health”.

Star performance of the month was by the Oxford Technology 2 VCT fund (up 50%), which last year sold Telegesis at a multiple of 45 times its investment and in May announced its biggest asset OC Robotics was on the point of being acquired.

Jane Gregory of Haines Watts, said: “We started the Young Entrepreneur of the Year competition to provide support to people like them. What has struck us is the confidence that they have – they are extremely driven and determined to succeed. But while running your own business is the right choice for some it has to be done with care and planning. Haines Watts aims to offer help through both the competition and via the practical business advice that we give our clients – our door is always open.”

The HWYE competition is for young entrepreneurs from around the Thames Valley
