Queen’s Awards for Solent firms


A small Southampton company that is helping to revolutionise street lighting systems was one of nine companies from the Solent region named in the 2017 Queen’s Awards for Enterprise listing, which this year was in celebration of the Queen’s 91st birthday.


INDO Lighting received its Innovation award for the Direct Drive LED outdoor lighting technology that significantly improves lantern reliability and lifetime. Managing director Tom Baynham said: “For a relatively small but rapidly growing business like ours, we’ve been able to take on larger, multinational players who dominate the street lighting market with our pioneering, added-value approach. We’re delighted to be bringing products to market that don’t cost customers a fortune in ongoing maintenance and capital replacement costs.”


Poole-based BOFA International received the same accolade in recognition of its revolutionary Intelligent Operating first launched in 2012. The system combines multiple enhancements to increase efficiency and performance in fume extraction. “At BOFA we are very proud of being a successful British manufacturer, and to receive this recognition in what is our 30th year is a fantastic achievement and testament to the hard work of everyone at the company,” said a statement.

Winchester-based RJM Corporation, trading as RJH International, is a specialist provider of a range of innovative and technologically- sophisticated products and services aimed at the power and industrial plant sectors. It was named for its design and manufacture of Ultra-Low NOx Burners for thermal-fired combustion plant. “Today RJM’s primary focus involves working in partnership with some of the world’s leading utility supply companies and other large combustion plant, helping them to operate as efficiently and as cost- effectively as possible,” said the company.

It was honoured for its Deckvest lifejacket and its innovative approach to increasing comfort, style and acceptance of wearing safety equipment on water. Spinlock’s James Hall said: “With no significant technical or aesthetic change in lifejackets for over thirty years, we decided to develop the Deckvest – a completely new personal lifejacket that is attractive and comfortable to wear; a revolutionary move and step-change in lifejacket design.”


Four Solent companies received awards for International Trade, including Auto Integrate, the Portsmouth business specialising in an online vehicle maintenance electronic authorisation software system. “The Auto Integrate platform has been designed to support the full spectrum of industry users and fleet management companies, as well as large national suppliers and smaller, independent vendors,” said the company.


Bigneat at Waterlooville design, manufacture and service laboratory fume cabinets and controlled atmosphere enclosures for pharmaceutical automation. It offers protection from chemical fumes, powders and biological hazards, including equipment for creating a sterile working environment. Its trademark Chemcap carbon filtration was first used in ductless fume cabinets, but is now used in all types of custom built enclosures and cleanrooms.


Customised supply of nautical charting, publications, flags and instruments for the global superyacht industry earned Winchester-based David Store Navigational Management an honour. Managing director David Store said “Recent years have seen exciting but busy periods of growth and the award provides us with extra motivation to continue our development to create the world’s best superyacht management service.”
