DEALS AWARDS 2017

SOLENT

Deals of every description and a surprising award debut

Variety and change were hallmarks of the Solent Deals Awards this year, fresh qualities ensuring that the excitement and enjoyment levels for 250 ‘black-tie’ guests were maintained if not exceeded once again on this annual night of the year for the south coast corporate finance community.

With 520 nominations, the Deals Awards once again reflected the strength and importance of the Solent dealmaking community, but also its scope and scale of operations.

As David Murray, publisher of The Business Magazine, said in thanking the judges and event sponsors – Blake Morgan, Clarke Willmott, CMA Recruitment, HSBC, IGF, Meridian Corporate Finance, Moore Blatch, PwC, and Taylor Made Computer Solutions – and welcoming everyone: “Our judging panel was pleased to see a great variety of deals being nominated.

“We were looking for deals which were complex – perhaps cross-border, or completed in a tight timeframe; deals where good multiples were achieved; or against-the-odds deals where a completion finally happened after previous thwarted attempts. And, of course, the judges wanted to recognise highly-successful Solent companies, strong management teams, and good exits.

“We were aiming to ensure that this competition embraces all deal sizes and as many deal advisers and funders as possible. We weren’t disappointed.

“We also had strong nominations for Young Dealmaker – the first year for this category – and the decision to split the Deal of the Year into three sections – Large, Mid-Range and Small – was vindicated by solid entries in all three.”

The debut of the new Young Dealmaker of the Year Award brought its own surprise headline. The judging panel decided the quality of emerging talent in this new under-35s category of ‘rising stars’ deserved joint winners – “Two very impressive dealmakers among a strong entry, all highly talented and impossibly young and vibrant.”

Some things were more familiar.

The charm and wit of popular broadcaster and presenter Mark Durden-Smith ensured proceedings ran smoothly. Hilton at The Ageas Bowl provided a sumptuous setting and mouth-watering menu; and guests gave generous donations of £1,669 to help London’s Grenfell Tower fire tragedy survivors, and £1,502.50 to the event’s chosen charity Brain Tumour Research.

And, voting by the gathered sector professionals took place on the night – for the three major Deal of the Year winners.
