BODY MECHANICS NOT JUST A PRETTY FACE FLICKS’ ALEX GARCIA
by kevin plautz photo by jay jones There’s a new fresh face on the scene on University
Avenue in Hillcrest and favorite neighborhood bar Flicks, grabbed him first. Known for its welcoming, fun atmosphere, this “family” bar has been in business for over 33 years and is the best place in town to meet people of all ages and backgrounds, get to know the neighborhood and make new friends as you do. The Rage Monthly sat down to learn more about this
24-year old bar-back who landed in San Diego a short while ago, hailing from Woodland, California.
Where did you go to school? What was your major? Sacramento State, Kinesiology.
What brought you to San Diego? Two sister siblings living here. I was also dating someone who was moving down here for school.
How long have you lived in San Diego? It will be four years in September 2017.
Did you work in the bar industry before Flicks? I started working as a bar-back in Pacific Beach
upon moving here. Then I was a server in Mission Beach.
Before you were an employee at Flicks, I heard you had a run-in with the Flicks Security staff. What happened? It was a Sunday Funday, many moons ago…I was
caught “doing the dirty” in a bathroom stall at Flicks. Six weeks later, I was working at Flicks.
How did you get hired at Flicks? I was at Flicks with some friends on a Saturday and
one of the regulars came up to me and said that I should join the underwear contest because of the free drinks. I had just enough tequila shots to join in
the fun. Even doing a stiff and awkward dance, I won the contest. The bar gave me $100 cash and a $50 bar tab. Where else can you go out on a Saturday and make money?
What does your job as bar-back entail? As a bar-back I restock everything a bartender
might need including beer/liquor, ice, straws, fruit, glasses and cleaning up after our wonderful patrons.
What is the hardest part of your job at Flicks? The hardest part of the job is getting everything done while washing endless stacks of glasses.
What can we look forward to at Flicks during Pride? We are having events to go along with the festivi-
ties: Friday we have the block party pre-game going on and on Saturday Flicks will be a great place to get drinks while you watch the parade.
What your favorite part of working there? Flicks is a rare place to work because you feel part
of a family. Couldn’t ask for a better boss than Jeff Jackson. Don’t know of a coworker that would disagree.
What is your favorite night to work at the bar and why? My favorite nights to work are always Thursdays,
which is Flicker because we have two DJs, one on each side playing different types of music.
Didn’t we see your picture inThe Rage Monthly a couple of months ago working at another bar? In the last seven months, I’ve been lucky to work
with great people at private and charity events like the Easter Bonnet Competition at Concept 278 and helping out at Cody’s Home and Gift.
