CRUM LETTING FREEDOM RING
Next up is Brian Justin Crum, who placed
fourth on the 11th season of America’s Got Talent with killer renditions of Queen’s “Somebody to Love” and Tears for Fears “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” It’s a no-brainer that he has been tapped to perform “The National Anthem” at The Spirit of Stonewall Rally. The 29-year-old singer, who has also acted
on Broadway in shows likeWicked, began performing at a young age and “maintained it my entire life.” Another aspect of his life he has maintained is to be true to himself and being “his most authentic self.” Crum came out to his mother very young, after she found an autographed picture of the lead singer from Dashboard Confessional in his closet, ironically. “She asked me if I wanted to talk about anything and I told her I thought I was bi; that was like the gateway drug,” he explained. “It seemed like the right time and I was ready to do so.” Crum is “excited” to be an Honorary Grand Marshal and to sing “The National Anthem.” He told us that there are certain lyrics that resonate even more for him now. “‘The land of the free and the home of the brave...’ We live during a time in this country, where we’ve taken our freedom for granted, I think,” he said. “The LGBTQ community even over the past couple of years, we’ve had a lot of exciting moments. Now, it’s kind of a time where we’re being squashed a bit. People are being very brave and standing up, because this is the ‘Land of the free...’ and we do deserve to have all of these rights.”
