TERRY ELLIS HOLD ON WITH EN VOGUE

As a member of En Vogue, Terry Ellis invited listeners to “Free Your Mind,” as one part of the Billboard Top 10 most successful girl groups of all-time. With style and sassiness, they dominated radio and MTV with their chart hits, “Hold On,” “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It),” “Giv- ing Him Something He Can Feel,” “Whatta Man” with Salt ’N’ Pepa and “Don’t Let Go (Love).”

The then-quartet, consisting of Ellis, Dawn Robinson, Cindy Herron and Maxine Jones went through lineup changes in subsequent years with Robinson leaving in 1997 and Jones in 2001; although the original “Funky Divas” have toured as recently as 2009. Now a trio, which features Ellis, Herron and Rhona Bennett, the ladies are prepping a new album, Electric Café, to be released this summer. It will be their first new material released

since 2004 and the time felt right, according to Ellis. “Being on the road is time consuming, but we finally found a situation and partner- ship with a label, eOne Records, that we’re happy with,” she said. “You’re going to get the eclectic En Vogue signature harmonies, but I feel like the record has a more global, international feel to it.”

Seeing as the ladies are always on the road touring, currently with Bel Biv Devoe, on “The Three Stripes Tour,” the subject of favorite songs to perform came up. “When you think about favorite anything, you kind of go to your first. I’m going to have to say ‘Hold On,’ ‘My Lovin’ (Never Gonna Get It)’ and ‘Free Your Mind,’” Ellis said. “And from the new stuff ‘Déjà vu’ and that’s so much fun to perform.” Audiences at the Pride Music Festival can

expect a “high energy show” when the trio hits the stage. “So you’re going to get all of our hits,” Ellis said. “We’re going to perform ‘Déjà Vu’ and we do a tribute to all of the singers who inspired us and we consider the real funky divas: Donna Summer, Chaka Khan, Tina Turner. So, there’ll be lots of dancing and partying!”
