Hate: (Still) A Four-Letter Word Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the

past few years—which, let’s face it, may not be a terrible idea—you’re well aware of one simple fact: This world is shit. Don’t get me wrong, being able to watch current

events unfold like some over-the-top soap opera, starring a D-list celebrity beats the alternative. But, still, we’re living in a time where life is particularly messy, which you would have already learned had you read my column in the May issue. Though it’s Pride month, or season or year (for

those who choose to celebrate their uniqueness and individuality all year long…by the way, bravo!), there’s a topic that has and will continue to outrank just about everything else on Google’s top-listed searches: Politics. I’ll be honest, I’m not a huge fan of politics, or

more importantly, being “politically correct.” However, the time for jokes and a lack-of-interest regarding this topic is no longer cute, or appropri- ate. Why? I repeat: This world is shit. While it’s fun to consider how politics play an intricate rule in all aspects of life: Sexual politics, dating politics, business politics), issues like “health insurance” and “equality for all” are what everyone’s talking about…As they should be. But I can’t help wonder, does the tone of the conversation have to be fueled with so much hate? I’m not saying you shouldn’t stick up for what you believe in, or try your damnedest to make a

difference in the world, especially when that differ- ence is near and dear to your heart. What I am saying however, is that you can’t fight hate with hate. Pull out your dictionary boys and girls and look up the word “hypocrite.” Many argue that Trump won the presidency by inflicting fear and hate amongst Americans. How then is spreading hate on the news and social media (in any context) different or better? Are you reading this, Kathy Griffin? Do I like Trump? No comment. Do I hate Trump?

No comment. Actually, no, I don’t, because I don’t hate anyone, not even Kim Kardashian. That’s not the point and as clichéd as it sounds, “Two wrongs don’t make a right.” Be involved in politics and current events, because after all, it is your right. The younger generation should be more concerned with what bills are being passed or overturned, versus what

bar offers the best happy hour. Use your voice, because you deserve to be heard, but don’t use that voice to spread more hate. Maybe I was napping in that prerequisite ethics class (I was), but hate on top of hate doesn’t create peace. Am I right? Believe me, I get it. Remember, I’m a boy who prefers to kiss other boys. Do I think we should be ostracized for who we love, the color of our skin, how much money is in our bank accounts, the labels sewn into our clothing (some of you queens need to check yourself on this one)? No, absolutely not! Because sexual preference, race and money don’t define a person. However, I’m not going to stoop to some low, childish, tantrum-throwing level or name calling if someone wants to judge and hate me for being more attracted to Dane Cook, rather than Rachel Leigh Cook. (Actually, it’s a hard pass on both, but you get the idea.) That’s their choice, their prerogative, their right and I can’t worry about what every Joe Blow in San Diego thinks. I’d never leave my apartment. Whether you’re right, wrong or different than the “norm,” stand up. Stand up for something, have an opinion and a view point. Just don’t spread your message against hate...with more hate. Remember everyone, it’s Pride season. Arguably,

what is one of Pride’s biggest and most important themes? LOVE. Love that can never be taken away from us…No matter what. Because at the end of the day, love always wins.
