community SAN DIEGO PRIDE’S

AVALON YOUNG AMERICAN IDOL SEASON 15 ALUMNA

FEATURING HOMETOWN GIRL

by lisa lipsey Back in the day as a baby dyke(ha-ha), in the early 2000s,

I recall going to my first Vagina Fest (aka: SheFest)with Laura Jane emceeing and performances by Danielle Lo Presti and the Masses. Also included were several years of Dyke March, when, along with the year my girlfriend (now wife) and I handed out bottled waters because it was close to 100 degrees. We even got in trouble with police one year, when our march delayed traffic. We felt like rebels and we had an incredible sense of pride and unity. None of this was officially San Diego Pride sanctioned, beside that, so much of San Diego Pride was just so all about the boyz. In 2014, in perhaps somewhat softer tones (so many of us have

kids now, or perhaps we feel less invisible), San Diego Pride officially sanctioned a woman’s event: SheFest. They call it “A woman-centered event that celebrates and supports the talents and contributions of women, while fostering meaningful connections within the LGBT and larger San Diego com- munity.” SheFest 2017 (the fourth annual under the helm of founder/volunteer lead Kelcie Kopf) remains free and open to all. It will focus on “Uniting our communities, creating authentic connections and using our diversity to create strength.” Come with your sunblock, hats, blankets, chairs and picnic baskets—invite your friends and family, leashed, furry babies too—for an afternoon of live music, workshops and games. This year’s SheFest takes place Saturday, July 8 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the North Park Community Park, 4044 Idaho Street, between Polk and Howard Avenues. ASL interpretation will be present all day and for the most part, the event is wheelchair accessible with wheelchair accessible portable restrooms. Throughout the day, workshops include:

“Cultivating Wellness: Queer Self-Care” with Rev. Kat Katsanis-Semel, M.A., Mental Health America, “Therapeutic Massage, Stretching and You” with Carly Delso-Saavedra and “California Queers: LGBT Laws and Policies from Coast to Coast” with Movement Advancement Project’sAlex Sheldon. Others include “DIY --”Bike Repair 101” with the She Wolves,
