spotlight: PRIDE San Diego
PRIDE 2017 ALLIED IN ACTION: UNITED FOR JUSTICE
SAN DIEGO by tim parks
It is estimated that there are 100,000 diverse people who attend San Diego Pride each year. The 42-year-old annual event taking place from Friday, July 14 through Sunday, July 16, has been a reflection of where we are as a commu- nity: whether addressing the early days of the AIDS epidemic or fighting for marriage equality. It’s not surprising in this climate of political upheaval, that
there is a battle cry for the community to come together once again, to fight oppression. This year’s theme reflects that: “Allied in Action: United for Justice.” Yet, there are just as many reasons to celebrate the strides we have made, in the march for equal rights and the obstacles we’ve overcome. The Pride celebration kicks off Friday, July 14 with the Spirit of Stonewall Rally andThe Spirit of Stonewall Awards. There will also be aTrans Pride March and the official raising of the 216-square foot rainbow flag followed byThe Pride of Hillcrest Block Party. Saturday, July 15, the Pride Parade will take its usual
route along University and Sixth Avenues, culminating in Balboa Park with the Pride Music Festival opening on Saturday and continuing through Sunday evening. This year’s Stonewall Main Stage performers areEn Vogue, Estelle andTinashe. The Rage Monthly spoke with a few different components
who make up the cogs of the Pride machine, hometown boy and America’s Got TalentalumBrian Justin Crum, who will be performing during the weekend, Spirit of Stonewall Community Grand Marshals Awardees,Susan Jester and Russell Roybal, as well as headlinerEn Vogue’s Terry Ellis, to find out how it feels to be involved in the Pride experience.
