Thomas John Thomas, of Bangor, Carnarvonshire, served during the Great War as a Naval Schoolmaster in the Royal Navy in H.M.S. Defence, and was killed in action at the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916, when the Defence was struck by two German salvoes that detonated her rear magazine; the ensuing fire spread to the ship’s secondary magazines which exploded in time, and she sank with the loss of all hands. Thomas is commemorated along with the rest of the crew on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.

Alfred Charles Brant was born in Basingstoke, Hampshire, and attested there for the Rifle Brigade. He served during the Great War with the 2nd Battalion, and died of wounds at home on 10 July 1916. He is buried in St. Leonard’s Churchyard, Sherfield-upon- Loddon, Hampshire.

Ernest Sutton attested for the West Yorkshire Regiment at York, and subsequently transferred to the Army Cyclist Corps. He served during the Great War with the 18th Battalion, and died of wounds on the Western Front on 22 October 1917. He is buried in Duhallow A.D.S. Cemetery, Belgium.

R. W. C. Treasure was commissioned Lieutenant, 2nd Welsh Brigade, Royal Field Artillery (Territorial Force Reserve) on 24 February 1910, and served as an Orderly Officer during the Great War.


H. W. Megeney served during the Great War with 72nd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He died on 21 September 1918, and is buried in Fins New British Cemetery, France.


George Adams MacFarland served with the Royal Army Medical Corps, attached to 23 Station Hospital, and died in England of wounds received during the Great War on 17 October 1917. He is buried in East Finchley Cemetery, Middlesex.


Jonathan Edward Rogers was educated at the London College of Divinity, and was ordained Deacon in 1914 and Priest in 1916. He served during the Great War as a temporary Chaplain to the Forces, 1918-19. He subsequently held various livings in the Diocese of Bath and Wells.

Charles Henry Mitchell was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the West Yorkshire Regiment on 11 March 1915, and served with the 1st/6th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment during the Great War. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 3 September 1916, whilst serving with “A” Company, on which date the Battalion took part in the attack on the trenches near St. Pierre Divion. They suffered heavy losses by machine gun fire from Pope’s Nose, and during hand to hand fighting at the German front line, and after strong enemy counter attacks were forced to withdraw having suffered 241 casualties. Mitchell is buried in Mill Road Cemetery, Thiepval, France.

Arthur Russell Bedwell attested for the Royal West Surrey Regiment at Deptford, Kent, and served during the Great War with the 1st Battalion. He died of wounds on the Western Front on 26 October 1918, and is buried in Awoingt British Cemetery, France.


Robert Holmes was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, and attested there for the Lancashire Fusiliers. He served during the Great War with the 11th Battalion, and was killed in action on the Western Front on 28 May 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Soissons Memorial, France.


Thomas Taylor was born in Seaham Harbour, Co. Durham, and attested for the Royal Garrison Artillery at Sunderland. Transferring to the East Surrey Regiment, he served during the Great War with the 7th Battalion, and died of wounds on the Western Front on 31 October 1915. He is buried in Bethune Town Cemetery, France.


C. R. Carter served during the Great War with the 46th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Saskatchewan Regiment), and died on the Western Front on 28 September 1918. He is buried in Haynecourt British Cemetery, France.
