Albert John Taylor was born on 10 October 1908, and attested for the Royal Army Service Corps on 6 March 1941. He served with the R.A.S.C. in North Africa from 18 December 1942, and subsequently in Italy, and was promoted Corporal on 21 November 1944. Mentioned in Despatches, he returned to the U.K. on 20 December 1945, and transferred to Class ‘Z’ Reserve on 23 March 1946.

Vincent Bratton was a native of Durham, England, and served as an Acting Captain in the Royal Pioneer Corps during the Second War. According to family tradition he commanded a prisoner of war camp in Burma, where a Japanese battalion surrendered to him. In a show of honour to him the Japanese commanding officer reputedly presented Bratton with his sword and his boots. He transferred from the Royal Pioneer Corps, and advanced to Lieutenant and Paymaster in the Royal Army Pay Corps, in December 1951.


Bratton relinquished his commission in the Royal Army Pay Corps on recruitment into the Southern Rhodesian Staff Corps (Federal Forces) in December 1954. He advanced to Lieutenant-Colonel and Chief Paymaster of the Rhodesia and Nyasaland Army Pay Corps in the 1960’s (President of the Forces Rugby Club from 1962), before serving as Senior Commandant DMM (Paymaster), Guard Force.

Maldwyn Herbert Lee was born in June 1916, and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Lee, and the husband of Margaret J. Lee of Dafen, Wales. He enlisted in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve as Aircraftman Second Class, in April 1941, and advanced to Leading Aircraftman in May 1943. He died 19 June 1944, and is commemorated on the Malta Memorial.

Mauritz Dietz Burger was born in Graaff Reinet, South Africa, in August 1901. He attested for the South African Air Force as a Wireless Operator in July 1940, and after carrying out initial training was posted to 5 Squadron, S.A.A.F. (Tomahawks) in Egypt in December 1941. The squadron were initially employed flying anti-shipping patrols, before being re-equipped with Kittyhawks and specialising in a ground-attack role over the Western Desert. He was posted for service with 7 Wing in July 1942, and advanced to Temporary Air Corporal in September 1943.


Burger was posted to HQ W/T Control Station, Waterkloof, Pretoria in October 1943, and advanced to Temporary Air Sergeant in January 1944. He was discharged in October 1945.
