William Clelland Lumley was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 8 August 1895, and joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on 15 August 1913. Transferring to H.M.S. Prince of Wales on 10 December 1913, he served in her during the Great War, and was advanced to Leading Stoker on 21 November 1916. He was awarded his Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 11 October 1928, and was advanced to Stoker Petty Officer prior to service during the Second World War.


Victor Charles Amos Jarrett was born in Boston, Lincolnshire, on 27 November 1892, and joined the Royal Navy as a Sick Berth Attendant on 9 October 1911. He served during the Great War at the Royal Naval Hospital, Chatham, and was advanced 2nd Sick Berth Steward on 1 March 1916, and Sick Berth Petty Officer on 23 August 1924. He was awarded his Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 26 October 1926, and was advanced to Sick Berth Chief Petty Officer prior to his discharge.

George Werran was born in Plymouth on 6 August 1896, and joined the Royal Marines on 1 September 1914. He joined H.M.S. Warspite on 5 April 1915, and served in her throughout the war, including the battle of Jutland. During the Second World War he was a Warrant Recruiter R.M. at Liverpool.

William O’Brien was born in Clonakilty, Cork, in May 1898. He joined the Royal Navy as Boy 2nd Class in March 1915. He advanced to Petty Officer in September 1927, and Chief Petty Officer in August 1936. He served at H.M.S. Cochrane during the Second War. O’Brien was invalided out service in July 1954.


O’Brien was awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., 6 July 1931, and the Second Award Bar, 27 July 1953.

John Edward Hannan was born in Manchester, in April 1891, and attested for the Royal Marine Light Infantry at the city of his birth, in July 1908. His service during the Great War included with H.M.C.S. Niobe, August 1914 - September 1915, during which period she was employed as part of the 4th Cruiser Squadron on the North America and West Indies station. Hannan also served with H.M.S. Revenge, February 1916 - June 1917, during which time she was present at the Battle of Jutland as part of the 1st Battle Squadron - and was considerably engaged, including scoring five hits on SMS Derfflinger.


Hannan served the remainder of the war as part of the Royal Marine Brigade at H.M.S. Victory. Post war service included with H.M. ships Indus, Revenge and Emerald (awarded L.S. & G.C. 17 February 1930). He was discharged 17 April 1930, only to re-enlist in the Royal Marine Police, 19 November 1931. He does not appear on Douglas-Morris’ published partial roll of RN and RM L.S. & G.C. Medal and Bar recipients, and Hannan’s service papers do not go beyond 1931, as such the Second Award Bar is unconfirmed.

Promoted Corporal on 14 September 1913, Sergeant on 7 January 1917, and Colour Sergeant on 25 October 1923, he was awarded his Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 29 November 1924, and was discharged on the termination of his second period of engagement on 19 September 1930.
