strong connection with the Birming- ham Children’s Hospital, having han- dling grounds maintenance there for the past 25 years. “We have also helped with a num- ber of gardening projects and seen first-hand how beneficial these proj- ects have been for the children at the hospital.” Over the past few years Single-

In 2015 Claire and husband John were part of a team of volun- teers who helped organise a charity ball at the Birmingham Hyatt to raise money for the children’s play area and the brain injury unit at the hospi- tal. The event raised £7,835. And in February 2016, John hosted

70 Years in Business Singletons Nurseries was established in 1947 by brothers Charles and Jack Kinder. The original business started as Kinder Brothers at Harborne Lane Nurseries. The brothers mainly grew exhibition chrysanthemums, veg- etable plants and bedding plants. The business developed when the
brothers bought a shop in Northfield for their sister Emma Peggy Singleton – John’s mother. When he left school John trained
at Pershore Horticultural College, before taking over the work of his uncles and renaming the garden centre Singletons, after his father Lionel Singleton. The business moved to its current
location in 2001 and now sits on 11 acres of land. Expansion has included more commercial growing, landscap- ing, and the opening of The Potting Shed Café in 2016.
