Questions & Answers With AmyWeiss

about that. The animal-human bond is so meaningful that I chose to make one of the main characters in Crescendo a horse, who is an unfailing source of love and support for her human. What are soul mates? Can we have more than one? Asoul mate is someone who helps us grow. The growth

may not necessarily be easy—our soul mates may challenge us. But they do so with the intention of helping us evolve. We often tend to think of soul mates as being romantic part- ners, but this is only one type of soul mate, and we certain- ly can and do have more than one. A soul mate can also be our parent, grandparent, child, sibling, best friend, and so on. Even a teacher who puts us on a path that influences the course of our life can be a soul mate. If there is someone in your life with whom you feel an unusual familiarity and oftentimes an instant connection, as if you’ve known him or her before, that can be a clue that you have found a soul mate. In the book, you write that the Earth is a school in

which we are all learning lessons. What are some of the lessons we are here to learn? Ultimately, we are here to learn about love: how to love

ourselves, how to love being alive, and most of all how to love one another. I think of it as if we are graduating from school with a degree in love. Along the way, we can take electives or other supplementary courses too. We might have a lifetime in which we focus on learning the lesson of patience, of service, of tolerance, of courage, of resilience, of forgiveness, of self-reliance—the list goes on and on. But every lifetime is an opportunity for us to grow and to learn how to love. Until we truly can open our hearts with love and kindness and compassion for one another, our education here in the physical world will never be complete. Like your main character Aria, you play the harp,

and you have trained as a therapeutic musician. What is harp therapy, and how can it help others? Therapeutic harpists play live harp music at the bedside

of hospital and hospice patients to facilitate the healing process. The music is soothing and relaxing and is specifi- cally chosen for the patient’s condition and need, rather than for entertainment. Scientific research studies have shown that this kind of therapy can regulate the patient’s vital rhythms and body temperature, lower stress hormones, strengthen the immune system, reduce pain and anxiety lev- els, influence brain wave patterns, and reduce depression. Harpists usually play for the critically ill, the chronically ill, women in labor, premature infants, Alzheimer’s patients, surgical patients, and those in a coma or dying. Sick or dis- tressed animals can benefit from this therapy too.
