® Health Tips to look younger and live longer... Dr. Oz’s Top Tips for Healthier Joints
Joint pain and osteoarthritis aremajor caus- es of disability among older adults in the U.S. Learnmore about how you can protect your joints and what to do if you’ve started to have pain. Get Active Physical activity is the best thing for your joints. Contrary to popular belief, studies have found that those who do more exer- cise have healthier joints as they age. The same is even true for osteoarthritis, but for a slightly different reason. While physical activity might be somewhat painful, exer- cise strengthens the muscles around the joint and decreases the pressure on the bones themselves. Starting out with low- impact activities like swimming or cycling can help get you strong enough to walk or even jog for longer distances with less pain. Avoid the Wrong Kinds of Movements While staying active is good for your joints, certain movements are more likely to lead to injury. Any activity that requires rapid changes in direction, twisting, pivot- ing or direct impact to joints can lead to damage and tears to the structures of the joint. Stick to activities like running, swim- ming or cycling and stay away from activi- ties like basketball or football. Lose Weight Losing weight is the single best way to pro- tect your joints and ease any pain you might have if you’re overweight or obese. The more weight your joints have to bear, the more stress you put on your joints and the more pain you’ll have. If you want a quick way to do something good for your joints, reduce your pain, and boost your health all at once drop a few pounds. Eat Right Joint health relies heavily on a healthy diet to support strong bones, muscle growth and
cartilage maintenance. Make sure you get plenty of fruits and vegetables in your diet with a healthy serving of protein from nuts, soy and lean animal sources like fish or poultry. Eating well will also help you lose weight. Get Strong Weight lifting strengthens the muscles around your joints and allows them to absorb most of the impact on a joint. The stronger your muscles, the less your joints bear weight as you move. Less weight means less
pain.Make sure you have a pro- fessional trainer, physical therapist or doc- tor teach you the right technique for these moves. Done well, they can radically improve the way you move in your every- day life, which may further decrease your pain. Done wrong, they can lead to serious injury. Seek Help Prolonged joint pain that lasts for weeks or months isn’t normal and should be checked out. A great place to start is your primary care doctor. They can assess the pain and determine if it might need more investiga- tion and treatment. Physiatrists or rehabili- tation doctors are often the next step. They can examine a joint and develop a rehabili- tation program to improve your function and help with the pain without surgery. If that doesn’t work, you might be referred to an orthopedist who mostly deals with surgery to improve joint pain and mobility. Physical Therapy Physical therapists are key players in help- ing an injured joint to recover and helping to reduce pain associated with moving a joint. Not only can they show you good technique for strengthening exercises, they can develop a progressive plan that fits your needs as you get stronger. They can also work with you to develop goals for your movement and design exercise plans
to get you where you want to
be.Any chronic joint pain is a good reason to see a physical therapist. Vitamins and Minerals The vitamins and minerals most likely to affect your bone and joint health are calci- um and vitamin D. If you think you may not be getting enough of either, discuss with your doctor whether you might need a supplement.

The Truth About Sunscreen Are you and your kids using sunscreen for the wrong reason? According to a recent research review, peo- ple often use sunscreen tomax out their time spent in the sun. That usually means too much exposure, especially for young kids. Playing smarter in the sun is taking the American Cancer Society's mantra "Slip- Slop-Slap" to heart and then adding "Skip" to it. So slip on a shirt, slop on SPF 30 sun- screen, slap on a hat, and skip outdoor play during peak hours. Chances are you've suffered a painful sun- burn with blistering and peeling at some point in your life. You know, the kind where you can't sleep and it hurts to move. The best way to help your kids avoid this intense discomfort is by limiting their direct expo- sure to the sun between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when the UV rays are the most intense. Doing so also greatly reduces their risk of skin cancer as adults -- particularly melanoma, the deadliest form of skin can- cer. Multiple studies have linked blistering sunburns in childhood to melanoma later in life.
RealAge Projection: Children who get into the habit of limiting sun exposure are likely to stick with this healthy habit as adults. If they do, their RealAge could be 29 when they are actually 32.
