CHAMBER NEWS CHAMBER NEWS

As Chamber Profile magazine goes to press, electors in Devon County have the opportunity of voting in the County Council elections. Conservatives have controlled the county since 2009 and the County Council has been highly supportive of the development of Devon Chamber of Commerce. When the outcome of the election is known, the Chamber will wish to engage with the new leadership and continue the productive partnership. Strong local government and a strong Chamber of Commerce are essential for the future success of the county. Elections however are not just local. The

country now faces a general election to be held

LATEST NEWS AND UPDATES FROM DEVON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The elections - and what they mean for Devon businesses

‘Strong local

government and a strong Chamber of Commerce are essential for the

future success of the county’

on 8 June. Devon Chamber has already started to meet regularly with local MP’s as it seeks to inform them of local business needs and ensure that they are well-briefed about the state of business in the county. This has become essential in the post-Brexit world. British Chambers of

Commerce has already published a chamber network manifesto entitled Brexit and Beyond and this can be seen on the BCC website. A local

Devon Manifesto will be prepared and released to all candidates. Key emerging themes are as follows: • The need for a stable business environment with low interest and inflation rates.

• Simplification of the tax system particularly for smaller businesses.

• No additional burdens to be placed on business particularly relating to HR matters.

• Promotion of economic growth locally and devolution of the powers to enable that to happen.

• Improved infrastructure for the South West particularly road, rail, access to air, broadband and telecoms.

• Emphasis on skills training and making it easier for companies to take on apprentices.
