Bearsted shops parade sale ‘almost complete’

TENANTSat the shopping parade off Bearsted Green say their fu- ture is in doubt as details emerged this week of a new owner set to complete on a sale. A member of staff at one store –

who preferred not to be named – described the situation as “living on borrowed time”. One said: “This is the third time

we have been through this. Before this latest planning application, Tescowas interested in The Parade and before that, the Co-op. “All our leases have run out and

nowwe are just living on borrowed time until we hear some news.” Caxtons, which has been han-

dling the sale, confirmed paper- work relating to the sale of the building by Evenden Estates, in Hove, Sussex, is likely to be com- plete within fourweeks. Our attempts to contact Evenden Estates directly have been unsuc- cessful. The future of the much- loved building has been uncertain since an application to tear it down and replace it with three retail out-

lets and flats above was submitted to the borough council in 2015. This and a subsequent plan – re- ducing the number of apartments from seven to six –was thrown out by the planning authority after more than 300 objections. How- ever, efforts by Bearsted and Thurnham Society to protect the building, by getting it listed were unsuccessful. As surveyors continued to scope

the building this month, tenants were in the dark about the new owner and whether their leases would be extended. When pressed on this, commer-

cial property negotiator Vaughan Hughes, from Caxtons, would only say: “We have had a lot of interest in this property and have accepted a competitive offer and the inten- tion is to keep it going as it is for the foreseeable future.”

tive site or sites” elsewhere might have to be found to satisfy the de- mands of the Local Plan, whichwas considered by the planning inspec- tor late last year. Speaking in favour of contesting Roxhill’s appeal were former mayor John Horne, RogerVidler of the Bearsted and Thurnham Soci- ety, Gary Thomas of the Campaign To Protect Rural England, Peter Couling of the Kent Association of Local Councils, and Bearsted bor- ough councillor Denis Spooner. Other speakers included bor-

ough councillors Eddie Powell, Val Springett, Brian Clark, Chris Gar- land and Shellina Prendergast. Former MBC leader, Cllr Chris Garland, said: “A sense of reality has to be around here rather than a sense of rhetoric and hyperbole… it would be completely wrong to defend something which is inde- fensible.” After the decision, UKip’s Eddie

Powell – who sits on the planning committee – said: “How ironic that the very people whowanted us not to contest the appeal made by the developers are the ones who must go and fight that appeal. It’s democracy in action.”
