Music is back on the Green this summer

MUSIC on the Green will be returning to Bearsted on Sunday,August 27. Traffic survey

BEARSTED Parish Council is to look into a traffic survey for the area.

Chairman Richard Camp said the authority members must decide where theywant to have surveyed. He asked: “Is it to be a specific

place or do we want it to go from, say, Notcutts and right through Bearsted?” A suggestion was made to ap- proach county councillor Paul Carter to cover the £500 cost of a survey of traffic speeds and vol- umes.

Council post

NEWLY-elected Maidstone Bor- ough Council member Denis Spooner, left, at- tended the recent Bearsted Parish Council meeting. He told members

he will be “hitting the ground run- ning” over issues such as the pro- posed Woodcut Farm develop- ment. Cllr Spooner was returned to the borough as a Conservative with a massive majority.

Wardenwarns

COMMUNITY warden Sally Williams has reported that children have been using a derelict house in Ashford Road as a play area. She also said that there have been

various cold callers going door to door in Bearsted offering to carry out work to guttering and sofits.

New chairman

RICHARD Camp (pictured) has taken over from Fiona Redman as the chairman of Bearsted Parish Council. He was voted in at May’s parish meeting and Paul Young was

elected as vice chairman.

Last year’s success was over- whelming, with £13,000 handed over to charity, but this year the or- ganisers aim to make it bigger and better than ever. Ruth Corney, from Bearsted

Events CIC, said: “Last year was great, but there are always lessons to be learned andwe have doubled the amount of toilets, and included a circus tent for youngsters offering performances and workshops.” The event will see the return of performers The Kick Backs, with appearances from Rosie Pennie, Fred Clark and more. The usual food and beer stalls will also be available. This year, for the first time, sign-

ers will ensure the 40 or so deaf people attending will be able to enjoy a visual interpretation of what is being said and sung. Ruth said: “This is very much a community event. Interpreters are now regular features at events like

V Fest and Chilli Fest andwewant to make our event as inclusive as possible.” TV presenter Wayne Barrow,

who is active with the deaf access movement, will also attend. Tickets – 70% of which have al-

ready sold out – are available for £12 for adults, £8 for OAPs and under 16s and £1 for those aged

under three. Family tickets at £35 are also available. The event runs from noon to 9.30pm and will be raising money for Demelza House children’s hos- pice and Maidstone foster support charity the Young Lives Founda- tion, aswell as Roseacre Raiders. For tickets, visit www.musicon- thegreen.co.uk.

‘Illegal’ parking is unacceptable

TRAFFIC inWare Street continues to pose problems for Bearsted and Thurnham parish councils. Thurnham parish councillor Richard Smith said he had written to residents who parked their cars in the road, to little effect. Cllr Smith attended the last Bearsted Parish Council meeting and in- formed members he had sent police information about some cars which were now parking obstructively il- legally on the pavement.

BEARSTED Parish Council is to seek a partner to investigate ways to apply for funding from the Sport England Community Asset Fund. Local statutory bodies like

parish councils can put in for sums ranging from £1,000 to £150,000. The issue was raised by Cllr Suzanne Camp, who floated the idea of a sports facility at Eliza- beth Harvie Field or elsewhere in parish. Sport England says that ”wel- coming and accessible” places to

that it’s much of a problem. I un- derstand Kent County Council does not support parking on the pavement, but recognise the police do not want to do anything about it.”

be active have a big impact on a person’s exercise routine and their likelihood of returning. The Sport England website

states: “We’re keen to hear from any sports club or community or- ganisation with a great idea that will make a difference to the places where people play sport and get active. “You might already own or lease

a facility in the local community, are considering taking over some grounds or a facility that has the potential to be used for sport and leisure.”

Thurnham Parish Council is now considering carrying out a consul- tation – costing up to £4,000 – and may approach Bearsted for a con- tribution towards the fee. Borough councillorVal Springett advised the parish members to involve County Councillors Shellina Prendergast and Paul Carter. Chairman Richard Camp acknowledged the road to be a contentious issue “but the reality is thatWare Street is not fit for pur- pose”.
