hour later for the opening ceremony. The popular event has become a highlight in the community calendar as well as raising thousands of pounds for local charities, amenities and groups. Last year, £5,000 was donated, of which £3,000 went to Maidstone Mencap, The charity is using the money for much- needed repairs to the roof at its base at Cobtree Hall in Mote Park so it can continue to provide vital services for people with learning disabilities, their families and carers in the Maidstone area. Thirteen other local good causes received donations of between £50 and £20.
This year, the bulk of the money
will go to Maidstone-based Hi Kent, which has a centre in Brewer Street and a shop in Week Street. The charity helps people with hearing loss and has a regular monthly hearing aid aftercare clinic at Bearsted Medical Practice. As in previous years, donations will also be made to other local organisations.
The procession provides plenty of scope for organisers of carnival floats and walking groups to let their imaginations run riot and also collect donations for the fayre’s good causes. Entertainment in the arena will include displays by Directions Performing Arts, Holy Cross Puppets, Maidstone
