Memo

announced the selected 35 makers to take part in Hothouse, the six-month creative and business development programme for promising up-and-coming makers. Nine jewellery designers have been chosen. They include three Edinburgh-based makers: Ruth Leslie, a recent graduate of Glasgow School of Art, now in a residency at Edinburgh School of Art; Elizabeth Jane Campbell, based at Precious Metal Workshop; and Karolina Baines. Lauren Bell-Brown, a graduate of Birmingham has won acclaim for her graduate collection, Unravelling the Fairytale. Rachel Butlin’s Forma collection in walnut, silver, enamel and bamboo is drawn from Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement.

Amanda Priest studied for her BA Hons degree in Jewellery Design after a 20-year career in the fashion industry, and is now producing jewellery in steel, gold and vitreous enamel. Tropezar is a design duo of Holly and Fiona, based in Nottinghamshire. Eva Fernandez graduated with a Masters in Fine Art at Edinburgh University following a background in mechanical engineering. Her work was selected in 2016 for the Marzee International Graduation Show 2016. (www.craftscouncil.org.uk/what- we-do/hothouse2017)

a treasure trove of jewellery, with new labels such as the on-trend jewellery of Rosie Fortescue, the Made in Chelsea star and fashion and lifestyle blogger, who studied History of Art at Goldsmiths’, showing stacking rings, delicate bracelets with multi-coloured gemstones and ear jackets that all mix and match, and her own favourite, the Heartbeat Hand Cuff. (www.scoop-international.com) London Fashion Week, from 17-21 February, moves to a new venue, The Store Studios, 180 Strand. Rock Vault, the fine jewellery showcase to promote British talent continues with labels like Completedworks, a partnership of two siblings, Mark and Anna Jewsbury, who create avant-garde designs formed around political or cultural observations using high quality materials and traditional techniques.

Also showing there for the first time, and not to be missed, is Tilly Sveaas, the designer behind the successful Silver Service brand, launching her first collection under her own name. True to her “off duty luxury look”, the brand combines bold pieces – padlocks, arrows, stars and tusks with a rock-chick attitude and whimsical charms and a vintage feel. New gold chains with varying lengths and weights are perfect for layering, and the range fits well with the prints, leather and lace of the new season. (www.tillysveaas.co.uk)

Zohra Rahman has decided to debut her collection at London Fashion Week. After studying jewellery design at Central St. Martin’s, Zohra returned to her native Lahore in Pakistan in 2014 to build her brand, far from the cutting edge technologies with which she had trained. Seeking out local craftsmen who wanted to embrace new skills, each piece is meticulously handcrafted and finished in house, and the collection is clean and contemporary. There is also now a Zohra Rahman store in Lahore. The latest Memo collection to be launched in London plays with the scale and proportion of paperclips to create a range in frosted 24ct gold plating and highly polished silver. The collection Unseen Letters recreates the rips and folds of paper in silver and gold cufflinks, earrings, rings and necklaces. (www.londonfashionweek.co.uk)
