Krautkremer adds that the more engaged student riders are in their school work, the less likely they are to be creating discipline issues on the bus and distracting the driver.
POSITIVE EXPERIENCE For others, Wi-Fi has produced the opposite effect. It has curbed the incidence of disciplinary actions. With a Wi-Fi network,
students are engaged and occupied. Twelve of the 60 school buses operated by North Carolina’s Mont-
gomery County Schools are now equipped with Wi-Fi. Te district is targeting installations for one-way routes of 60 minutes or longer, and one result is that discipline issues on these buses are now under control. With Wi-Fi, buses are not only safer from better behavior, but there’s a more positive bus experience for students and drivers. “Bus drivers have reported almost 100-percent reduction in discipline issues on longer bus routes since students are engaged with their device,” says Jeff James, assistant superintendent of learning for Montgomery County. “Tis benefits the transportation managers by reducing the amount of time they are dealing with discipline issues, allowing more time to evaluate route inefficiencies, among other duties.” Students benefit, he adds, by having more time to work on homework and i-Ready, the district’s online, adaptive, individualized, diagnostic assessment that determines competency on Common Core math and reading skills. He says that this provides students with more self-guided remediation as well as opportunities to collaborate on assignments. “Ultimately, this allows students to engage in more productive activities while on the bus,” James explains. “Te district has also seen an increase in students’ grades. Tis creates more family time with parents since students are able to complete most of their homework prior to arriving at home.”
