Kathy Matthews Transportation Supervisor | Broward County Public Schools | Oakland Park, Florida

Kathy Matthews has made positive waves by providing transportation ser-

vice for 270,000 students alongside staff that echo her leadership all through- out the central part of Broward County Public Schools, the sixth largest accredited school system in the country. As a career transportation supervisor and educator, Matthews said she continuously strives to practice diligent lead- ership by engaging and interacting with her team members daily. Community always comes first for Matthews. When issues arise with parents, students, bus routes, or risk management, Matthews always take the responsibility in resolv- ing any discrepancy pleasantly and professionally because of her dedication to community. Before assuming the role of transportation supervisor, Matthews still made earnest effort to be first on the front lines as a bus operation for a magnet middle school with 52 buses and 2,042 students. Robert Martin, di- rector of school operations for Broward County Public Schools, said that if the district was ever to require assistance to cover other routes, the department can depend on Kathy to be present to execute a successful job.

Having started with little to no knowledge in school transportation, John Laws has made quite a name for himself as director of transporta- tion for Aztec Municipal School District located be- tween the Navajo Nation and Jicarilla Apache Nation. After just completing his first year on the job, Laws culti- vated a variety of skill development and training for transportation operations: personal self-defense training for bus drivers, “out of the box” professional development training for district administration and interactive training to student disciplinary protocol through a fun game of foot golf. Aside from im- plementing training programs for team members, Laws successfully reduced operational costs from an operating deficit. He also works in conjunction with the San Juan Community Colllege’s Commercial Driver License program to provide students with the exposure and experience of school transportation operations, such as the generating a diver pool for local school districts to answer a need of quality drivers. Grant Banash, Aztec Municipal’s recently retired director of transportation, underscored Laws “has transitioned into his new position smoothly and has made a big impact on both department and district as a whole.”
