The Word Around Town Is…

Publisher Tony Corpin

Editor Ryan Gray

The following comments are responses to articles that recently appeared online or in the magazine.

A reader presents their take on Tony Corpin’s September Publisher’s Corner column, which encouraged more discussion on other potential ways to ensure a safer environment for children as they go to and from school via school transportation. What’s the next big innovation to strengthen child safety?

“Preventing kid’s risk is the major concern in every district. When negative

measures happen, but still it can overcome with the positive outcomes through several technologies that are currently available. Improve the kid’s safety by secured tracking apps and neglect the negativity of the school trans- portation community.” —Knilaitsolutions Comment at STNOnline.com

Another reader recognizes a recent article in July that calls into question a CBS

News report that misleads the public by drawing a correlation between criminals and school bus drivers:

“Tanks for your explanation of the real issues surrounding the CBS News

report. It’s sad they get away with such poor reporting on such an important subject. Keep up the great journalism.” —Arnie Koldenhoven, President and Owner Arrowhead Steel Co., Illinois

Dan Luttrell, trainer at North Lawrence central school district, shares his thoughts on an article in the August issue that explored the proper requirements to ensuring the braking system of a school bus:

“It’s pretty sad that some school systems would hire less qualified bus

drivers simply because hydraulic brake CDL certifications were easier to obtain. Overall, money dictates the quality and standards of the drivers in your fleet. In all my 33 years - the safest piece of the school bus happens to still be the DRIVERS. My question would be - What exactly are transporta- tion departments supposed to do when Federal regulations affect the budgets without federal money coming back to school systems to adhere to the new regulations?” —Dan Luttrell, Trainer North Lawrence CSD, Indiana
