the simulator is to get that driver to be a better, safer driver,” he said, adding that any specific procedural techniques the school district wants to reinforce can be provided on the simulator. Stricek added that simulators can be programed to create dis- tractions inside the bus including noisy, unruly students as well as those who might need medical attention. “Te main objective of a medical emergency to the driver is to pull the bus over in a safe place and call for medical help,” he said. “Again, it goes back to driving procedure and the decision-making skills of the bus driver.” Stricek pointed out that most of the functions performed by
the driver that involve new technologies occur while they are not driving. Operating tablets, cell phones, card readers and child-re- minder systems are in use while the bus is stationary. “Tose are the kinds of things that cause accidents, and we don’t want drivers doing those things while they are driving,” Stricek said. Stricek’s colleague, Dave Byerly, is the engineering manager
at Doron. He said that besides offering upgrades to existing customers, simulators could be customized to fit the requests of a school district, if they are practical. He said school districts are a small part of their market. “We’ve done some customization for school buses and the commercial markets, but it begins with the customer,” Byerly said. “And cost is always an issue. Unfortunate- ly, only a few school districts make the investment of training

their drivers with simulators.”
SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND VIRTUAL TRAINING Te exposure bus drivers get to new technology depends on the school district. Drivers must learn the technology on the buses they drive. In some cases, training on the new technology can add precious time to the training regimen.
