Slovenia draws up plans for closer ties with trade

Juliet Dennis juliet.dennis@travelweekly.co.uk

The Slovenian Tourist Board is putting together a trade strategy to raise awareness of the destination among agents.

Mladen Ljubisic, the tourist

board’s new head for the UK and Ireland, believes agent knowledge of the country – except for Lake Bled, the most popular destination for UK tourists – is limited. “We have a strong relationship

with operators but we are missing this with travel agents,” he said. “My objective is to get more

agents trained on our product, meet them and encourage them to sell the destination. “I don’t think agents know much about Slovenia apart from Lake Bled, and Ljubljana has only become well known in the last two years. I want to help agents differentiate Slovenia from other countries in eastern Europe.” Ljubisic will promote Slovenia to the trade as a good-value winter

ski destination for beginners and families, and for activity holidays such as walking, hiking, water sports and climbing in the summer. Ljubisic also aims to run an agent

fam trip to the destination at some point. In the meantime, he hopes to encourage agents to complete

online product training courses. He admitted Slovenia, which

borders Italy, Austria and Croatia, may be viewed as an expensive package holiday destination, but stressed it is economical, especially if dynamically packaged. Adria Airways, Wizz Air and easyJet all fly to Ljubljana. The tourist board expects UK

visitor numbers to grow by 10%- 20% this year, compounding a 22% rise in 2015 when there were

280,000 overnight stays by Britons. slovenia.info

WIN! Dubai Tourism, Emirates, Qantas, One&Only Resorts

and Atlantis The Palm to host the four-night trip from December 1-5. Details of the trip were still being finalised but the operator said agents would experience the region’s “thriving arts scene, notable traditions and world-class events and festivals”. There are nine places available. To enter,

agents must make a qualifying booking to Dubai including flights with Emirates or Qantas and three nights’ ground arrangements. The incentive is valid on

bookings made from now until October 9. travel2.com
