TALK BACK WHAT YOU’RE SAYING THIS WEEK
LETTER OF THE
WEEK
EDITORIAL@ TRAVEL WEEKLY.
CO.UK
Brexit is sure to hit the travel sector
Story: Industry reaction after UK votes to leave the EU It is good to be optimistic, but when the economy is down, house prices are expected to go down, there are going to be job losses and the pound is getting weaker, it’s the travel industry that will be the first sector to get hit. And all this thanks to the power-hungry politicians who have got us to this stage. VIVEK ANGRA
Life will go on whatever the result. Lots of dramatic stuff said by both sides in the run-up to the vote was deliberately sensationalist. Whatever the result, moderation will now come into play. But it is the long-term, global issues that will really shape the game. STEVE DUNNE
Mercury’s price rose by £98 with just one click
Story: Mercury Holidays shells out £22k to offset pricing errors Just had an email from Mercury quoting 10 nights’ all-inclusive from £649 for Koggala Beach Hotel in Sri Lanka. I clicked on the link and the price was £747. How can it jump £98 within seconds of getting the email?
ANNOYED WITH FALSITIES Travel Weekly would welcome a response from Mercury Holidays
Will my electronic prescription be valid?
GROUP
Story: Cook app connects unwell holidaymakers with UK doctors Does anyone know if electronic prescriptions are now valid in all European countries? I was in Italy last summer and had my doctor send me a prescription by email but I wasn’t able to use it at any pharmacy. I ended up going to a medical service in Rome for a valid prescription. I am headed to Greece this summer, so it would be nice to know! SANDRA
BREXIT FALLOUT
Stansted’s lack of staff was a disgrace
Story: New Stansted CEO shakes up management team I hope he shakes it up fast – after my experience of Stansted at the weekend I wouldn’t want to step foot there again. Three flights boarding at the same gate at the same time equalled pandemonium. No dispatchers available to dispatch the aircraft once ready to board – we had to wait two hours! And the pilot was having to run on and off the plane to collect passengers from the gate as no staff were available to chaperone. Absolute disgrace.
ANNOYED Travel Weekly would welcome a response from Stansted
TWEETS THIS WEEK
Richard Singer @rsinger79 My 7yr daughter asked me what the EU was. I told her it was what a load of rightwing old folk don’t like but would have been good for her
Andrew Evans @WheresAndrew On the upside, it’s a good time to travel to @VisitBritain, which is having a ‘Going out of Business Sale’ #Brexit
Gemma Antrobus @LuxuryTravelGem Making party food and mother is obsessed with putting doilies under everything! The 9yo’s really won’t care what the platters look like!
QUOTE OF THE
WEEK
“The top priority is dealing with the impact on the value of the pound, but there are other factors that could
make Brexit a big blow for the travel industry”
JOEL BRANDON-BRAVO Travelzoo UK managing director
