GRID CONNECTIONS

FEATURE SPONSOR

Keeping You Powered

H&Askham, a leading provider of specialist high voltage electrical installation services are widely known in the offshore wind industry for engineering services provided for the installation and terminations and testing of inter-array and export cable systems. However, historically the business has its roots firmly on dry land carrying out installation and maintenance work serving the National Grid.

INVESTMENT

The company is making continued investment in developing their onshore services to support projects providing connections to the grid on a number of new power generation installations and system upgrades.

THE GRID

The UK’s infrastructure requires redevelopment and upgrade to cope with the surging demands on the National Grid. Furthermore with the evolution of a much more diverse range of power generation methods, comes the need for these new technologies to effectively connect to the grid with the critical objectives being to optimise performance and efficiency and maintain stability of the grid.

The stock of specialist plant now includes: 20T cable drum trailer, driven and static cable drum stands and jacks (<35T), cable pulling winches (<10T) and looped control electric driven cable pushers. The company continues to cultivate and develop their in-house skills and competencies with ongoing training for all, from site operatives and technicians to their Engineering and Management teams.

INNOVATION

The H&Askham team installed ABB Dry Type GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear) Terminations at a substation which is fed from hydro power in Inveruglas, Loch Lomond, which supplies 160MW of power to the surrounding towns and villages. These terminations were the first of their type in the UK.

EXTRA HIGH VOLTAGE

Since successful completion the company has been awarded a number of contracts working on both the extra high voltage generation and distribution networks up to 400kV.
