Kids October Kids Craft Corner by Laurie Malmstrom Autumn has arrived with warm days and cool breezy evenings, Even

mother nature gets busy by dressing the trees in bright colors of yellow, or- ange and red. Very soon it will be all Hallows Eve and this month we’re going to make Paper Plate masks that can be used for Halloween, school plays or dress-up.

Paper Plate Masks Paper Plate masks can be simple or complex depending upon the dec-

oration and purpose for creation. We’ve provided three examples. Two de- signs are simple and intended to create characters for a school play. The last design is more intricate and will be used on Halloween.

Materials white paper plates, glue, construction paper paper punch, string or ribbon, markers, scissors

Using either the whole

plate or half of the plate, mark the area for eyes. Carefully cut out the eyes (be sure you can see; safety first!). Punch a hole in each side of the mask and thread string or rib- bon through both sides to attach to your head. Cre- ate noses, beaks, feath- ers, eyelashes or ears out of colored construction paper. Cut them out and place them on your paper mask. Do you like what you see? Glue the facial features to the plate. Draw additional features with markers.

Now you’re ready to tell the story of the Three Little Pigs or

Peter Rabbit. And for me, I might just fly the coop in my bird mask! Happy and safe Halloween!
