eaders can now enjoy the very finest theatre, opera, ballet, exhibitions and music beamed live via satellite onto a big screen nearby. Live screenings from the National Theatre, the Royal Op- era House, Glyndebourne and the RSC are now available at the Flavel Arts Centre in Dartmouth. Recent innovations in digital projection technology mean that small, independent cinemas like the Flavel can receive these live transmissions of performances from anywhere in the world via satellite. The productions are filmed using tracking cameras, so no attempt is made to make a film of the production but really to screen the production in a dynamic way. This may seem a very subtle difference but viewers are still given the theatrical experience but in a cinema. The other very popular aspect is the ‘behind the scenes’ content. This is generally interviews with leading actors, performers or directors and also glimpses back stage before

or after the curtains go up. “The way the evening is presented and the ambience created, you are seduced into believing you are at a first night performance in London” commented one of the Flavel’s customers. With many of these screenings selling out, they are proving a big hit with the Flavel’s customers. In Dartmouth, a long way from London, or indeed any other city that might book such quality productions, the best in nationally acclaimed performances can be offered locally and at a fraction of the original prices. Being part live performance, part cinema, it’s a fascinating hybrid that is encouraging a greater interest in all of the events at the Flavel. This is a new industry and the scope for development is enormous. Film distributors are now looking at the potential for screening other genres such as exclusive exhibitions and live music from sta- dium tours. Keep an eye on the Flavel’s website for all the latest information! August live screenings: 13th
