and wipers and parking sensors. Allure models have other features including leather seats and an ‘air scarf ’ which blows warm air down the back of your neck from vents in the headrests. GT models have more sporty styling. All models have the same roof system and, whether up or down, there were no rattles or vibration evident during my week of test driving. w, and ride quality is very good, al- though very bumpy surfaces will unsettle it a little. Top speed of this model is 129 mph and the 0-60 mph time is quite respectable at 9.7 seconds. Fuel economy is a plus-point, 49.6 mpg combined. Exterior styling is purposeful and attracts attention. SUBARU FORESTER While the impreza may be Subaru’s best-
known model, its all-wheel-drive Forester has its own distinct reputation with strong appeal to rural motorists who often need better grip, good off-road ability and towing prowess. The new Forester is smarter and
sharper than its predecessor, more spacious, has upgraded kit and more responsive driving dynamics. There are six different Forester models - including a
sporty-styled XT - utilising petrol and diesel engines and with some variants featuring auto transmission. The range kicks off at £25,495, with the top version at £30,995. All have permanent all-wheel-drive. My test model was a mid-range 2.0 litre diesel in XC trim, which includes climate and cruise control, reversing camera, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, front, side, curtain and knee airbags, remote locking, power windows, adjustable steering column, glass sunroof, radio/CD/USB/Bluetooth and heated front seats. It is priced at £26,995. The 2.0 litre diesel unit provides 145 hp, a top speed of 118 mph and a nippy 0-60 mph time of 10.2 seconds. Fuel
Unbiased Advice - Superb Service
The car handles well, remaining composed at speed even on tight bends
car looks great from the front and rear, though side-on it looks just a tad bulky. Interior space is very good, though the rear seats are best for smaller occupants or shorter journeys. The cabin is smart and functional, and trim
materials are very good quality. Boot space, as with all these convertibles, is somewhat compromised, as the folding roof has to go somewhere! However, even at its most limited,
with the roof down, it can still accept a couple of hold-alls or a reasonable load of supermarket shopping.
economy is 47.9 mpg combined, and in a busy week in which the car was driven enthusiastically, I still returned just over 40mpg. The engine’s power delivery is smooth and quiet, and, overall, I found the Forester’s driving dynamics as impressive as any of its bigger- selling class rivals.
smarter and sharper than its predecessor
The revised exterior styling boosts the Forester’s visual cachet and anyone checking it out will be impressed by the specification and its driving feedback. it has a light, precise, agile feel, with composed road-holding, thanks to a revised chassis and stiffer suspension. Longer, taller and wider than the previous
version, the new Forester also has a longer wheelbase and the cabin has been enlarged for greater space and comfort, particularly in the rear. With 505 litres of luggage space - much
more if you fold the seats, - it scores well on practicality too. The Forester has always had a loyal following and this new
version, well-kitted and very rewarding to drive, will do a lot to attract new customers to the Subaru brand.•
