BISON ARRIVE FOR BREEDING PROGRAMME IN RUSSIA

Bison are the latest live animal shipment to be transported by Volga-Dnepr Airlines, carried onboard an IL-76TD-90VD freighter to Yakutsk in Russia from Edmonton, Canada.

The 30 bison calves travelled in special containers that had been previously delivered to Canada by Volga-Dnepr Airlines. The animals were accompanied by veterinaries and representatives of the Canadian Elk Island National Park to ensure their health and comfort during

the journey. The IL-76TD-90VD fl ight was organised by the Russian broker Aerologic Line, who chartered the Volga- Dnepr aircraft on behalf of the Ministry of Nature of the Republic of Yakutia.

The animals will take part in a breeding programme in Yakutia. The bison is currently a near threatened species according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature red list. Earlier in 2006 and 2011, 60 calves were donated by the Canadian Government to the Ust-Buotama and Tympynai reservations in the Republic of Yakutia to help re- establish the Eurasian population of bisons. The animals settled well in their new surroundings and this resulted in a successful repopulation programme.

A further delivery of bison to Yakutia is scheduled for 2015.

Delivery of the third Boeing 747-8F is the latest step by ABC to replace older freighters in its fl eet with new generation cargo aircraft. The addition of the new 747-8 reduces the average age of the fl eet to 4.1 years. AirBridgeCargo’s fl eet now consists of 11 Boeing 747 aircraft (fi ve Boeing 747-400ERF, three Boeing 747-400F and three Boeing 747-8F).

The metal fuselage was manufactured by the Irkutsk Aviation Plant and carried to the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute to conduct tests. The Irkut MS-21 belongs to the new generation of passenger aircraft and its development and production is being supported by the Russian federal programme for ‘The Development of Civil Aviation in Russia until 2015’. The Irkut MS-21 is one of the key projects of the Russian aviation industry in the civil aircraft market.
