ENGINEERING & LOGISTICS CENTRE

Yes. We are able to source a vast range of aircraft outside the VDA fl eet, enabling ELC to provide tailor- made solutions for specifi c client requirements.

Outside of the actual physical transportation aspects of ELC’

s

work, what other support services do you offer?

We have expertise in total project management, in the design and fabrication of transportation frames and equipment, in conducting route surveys and in providing engineering consultation services as well as helping clients with insurance and organising any export or import documentation required.

What has been the customer response to ELC’

s offering?

We’ve received great feedback from a range of clients about how ELC has made the impossible possible, saved them money and reduced their stress levels. Most of all, we are helping them gain greater control over their supply chain.

PROJECT EXAMPLE 2 Compressors to Kazakhstan

ELC was contracted to conduct a feasibility study, provide recommendations and logistical solutions for the possible movement of compressors from East Midlands in the UK to Kazakhstan by air. This work was carried out for our client, another leading freight forwarding organisation, which needed to deliver the compressors to Atyrau, Kazakhstan.

After a lengthy planning period and various adjustments to the cargo specifi cation based on our recommendation, a successful operation was achieved. This was a complex project which allowed zero margin of error as the clearance between the top of the cargo and the airframe was a mere 5mm. The compressors reached their destination safely onboard two AN- 124-100 fl ights.

The one-stop-shop approach is obviously appealing for customers – how would they have managed such complex shipments before?

They would ordinarily source the various modes of transport individually

from various supply chain providers, including packing, trucking and crane companies. This of course lengthens the supply chain, posing greater risk for communication breakdown and a less competitive outcome.

ELC isn’t simply about an air cargo solution is it? Tell us about how you involve other modes of transport to provide the optimal customer solution.

We provide fully integrated logistical solutions to a broad client base, including freight forwarders, charter brokers, shippers and manufacturers. This involves designing and delivering transportation services for major industry sectors such as Oil & Gas (LNG), Mining, Energy, Aerospace, Automotive and Construction.

Our global team has a wealth of knowledge and experience we can call upon and that allows us to provide end-to-end solutions using a range of transport modes – including over road, water and rail as well as air cargo services. It’s all about fi nding the best outcome for the customer for each logistical challenge.

Do you use aircraft outside of the Volga-Dnepr Group fl eet if they offer a better customer solution?

What is the most complex project you have been involved in so far?

The natural gas fi eld project in Papua New Guinea, reported in this issue, is a major project for us. We’ve also been involved, for example, in the design and fabrication of special loading equipment for the transportation of Boeing 787 wings and working with the Bombardier C series project to Canada, where part of our involvement has included the provision of mobile cranes for aircraft loading/offl oading.

Is ELC a global service?

Yes. ELC has teams in the U.S., UK and Russia together with our Volga-Dnepr Airlines’ offi ces in the UAE, China and Japan which are also able to provide logistical support. Both Volga-Dnepr UK and its ELC division are ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001 accredited and are members of the British International Freight Association, FIATA and the Baltic Air Charter Association.
