control, alloy wheels, power windows and door mirrors and a wealth of detail features. It also has a lot of safety equip- ment which has earned it a top five-star NCAP rating. My recent Honda Civic test model was another popular version, a 1.8 petrol version, a 5-door in ES trim and priced around £18,995. First impression is that the car looks unusual, especially from

the rear, which features a two-section glass tailgate. The unconventional theme continues in the cabin, with a split-level facia with dials in one sector and digital read-outs on another. The Civic’s interior scores well for

comfort, with very supportive seating. Load space is impressive – 477 litres with seats in use and up to 1378 litres with seats folded. Underway, the Civic is a comfortable and relaxing motorway cruiser, and is

MINI COUPÉ Mini has pulled off an amazing design feat by creating a stunning

two-door, two-seater hatchback that has plenty of street-chic and is a delight to drive. Clever use of interior space means the loss of two rear seats

provides a surprising amount of luggage space so it still scores well on practicality without compromising its charismatic sporty image. Mini Coupé prices start at around £16,640, rising to £23,795

for the John Cooper Works edition, which was my test model. This version has more power – a hefty 211 hp from its 1.6 litre petrol engine. It is quick - top speed is 149 mph, the 0-60 mph time just 6.4 seconds. Combined fuel economy is respectable at 40 mpg. A crisp-action six-speed manual gearbox is standard, as are

features such as brake energy regeneration, auto start/stop, power steering, parking sensors and a DAB radio/CD unit. The John Cooper Works test model also has a multi-function steering wheel, cruise control, heated seats, climate control, and larger alloys among its extra kit. The Mini coupé looks very low but headroom is surprisingly

good, even for a six-footer. Low suspension setting and lowered seats mean there is still plenty of occupant space. Looking cool and classy, the cabin design is brilliant and very distinctive with most of the switchgear within easy reach. Behind the two seats is a narrow ledge for stowage of small

items, but the tailgate opens to reveal a large luggage hold which can easily accommodate a couple of large suitcases and more.

Visually, the coupé is very eye-catching, with a crouched road stance. it has two rear spoilers, one fixed, the other

stable and reassuringly grippy on minor roads. Overall, it is a very pleasant car to be in. Top speed of my test model is 134mph, the 0-60 mph time is 9.1 sec- onds and combined fuel figure is impres- sive for a petrol model at 47.1 mpg. With Honda’s unmatched reputation

for dependability and strong re-sale values, the latest Civic line-up offers a wise choice to buyers who like distinctive styling and - particularly in diesel form - low running costs.•

automatically rises at 50 mph and lowers at 37 mph. It can also be permanently raised at the touch of a switch. On the road, the coupé handles beautifully, as do all Minis. It’s

precise, grippy and responsive. The suspension is compliant on all but the roughest surfaces and delivers decent ride quality for so sporty a car. The agility and assurance of the Mini are renowned and this latest version maintains that high standard and helps put some real joy back into everyday driving.

“The Mini coupé looks very low but headroom is surprisingly good, even for a six-footer.”

This coupe model has tremendous appeal and once again shows how the innovative Mini designers can re-work a standard Mini into something very special. •
