Around Kingswear NEWS FROM THE SUNNY SIDE

MAKING HISTORY Just after four o’clock on Tuesday December 18th there

was a cacophony of hooters and most particularly steam whistles shaking the air around the Dart as Kingswear Castle entered the port, returning after a forty seven year absence. She has come from the Medway and Chatham Dockyard to re-enter service (on a fifteen year lease, i believe) with the steam railway and boating people to add lustre to their Round Robin experience. Surely it will work like a dream, a trip on a steam boat is a rare and exciting happening, one which most people will never have had. And what an entry and welcome! Hercules was stand- ing impatiently in Kingswear station and as soon as the ves- sel entered the harbour the steam whistles were set alive with the longest steam welcome I’ve ever heard. Kingswear Castle was being towed by tug but managed to answer her welcome with shrill blasts of hello. The entourage consisted of other ferry boats from the company and the two Dit- tisham ferries, all blasting their hootery heads off. It was a very moving moment and quite definitely an historical high spot for the communities of Dartmouth and Kingswear. Welcome back Kingswear Castle and long may you stay.

much discussion regarding house spotting! Parish Council Chairman, Jonathan Hawkins, gave an impromptu speech thanking WCPS members for their commitment and care. In his congratulations he offered the continued support of the Parish Council and wished the society well for the future.

2 – 4 TEA CLUB If you are a bit isolated, feel you’d like a bit of company,

perhaps not quite as mobile as you once were, then this is for you. A group of ladies in the village are starting-up a local meeting place once a month, on the first monday of the month, in the lower village hall. If you need transport to get there that’s no problem, just call 752251 and it will be arranged for you. By the time you read this there will already have been one event, possibly two, but that’s not a problem, just come along next time. Let’s let the ladies explain themselves: “Our aims are to provide a friendly place to have a regular social club with refreshments, to enable Kingswear residents to meet, socialise and have access to information regarding any local services and know where to ask for information or help of any kind.” And, it must be said, there will be cake.

The first meeting in February was a pleasing success with a substantial turn-out enjoying a good chat and first class refreshment. And there was cake!

The Kingswear Castle Paddle Steamer.

BL COLLECTION Three-MGs Melhuish has asked me to let you know that

the November collection for the British Legion which was staged at seven locations around the village, including the school, raised a very creditable £233.05. Well done all.

10 YEAR CELEBRATION Waterhead Creek Preservation Society recently celebrated

their 10th anniversary with a Christmas cocktail party for members and invited guests. Everyone was welcomed to the lower village hall with wine and festive nibbles by chairman Paul Folca and committee members Anne Kelsey, Stephen Yates, Rosemary Taylor and Pat Cormack. A display of old photographs of the creek area caused

Wednesday of each month at 2.15pm and offers a varied programme of events and speakers. In January, members watched a demonstration of jewellery making and future talks include - An Edwardian Lady’s Layers, and a visit to the Start Bay Lighthouse. New members and guests are always welcome.

KINGSWOMEN CAPERS The women of Kingswear started the New Year as they

mean to go on with a fantastic Mediterranean Evening hosted by Manna from Devon. Holly Jones demonstrated a wonderful selection of exotic and delicious foods which were enthusiastically sampled and washed down with various wines. The January weather faded into oblivion and summer seemed just around the corner. In February the romantic theme continued with an Ice Cream and Chocolate Fest. Ladies had a blind tasting session of flavours as diverse as beetroot, mango, brown bread and gooseberries and chomped their way through chocolates as a pre cursor to Valentine’s Day. The calories will have to go in March as we are taking
