Recommendation reads: ‘For conspicuous gallantry during operations East of Ypres on 20th and 21st September 1917. He performed his work as Battalion runner with the greatest courage and daring. On several occasions he carried messages to the front line through heavy shell fire. On his journeys to the front line he invariably carried water or S.A.A. Although exhausted and severely shaken by shell fire he continued to perform his duties. His services were invaluable in maintaining communications with the front line and his conduct was always worthy of the highest praise.’
Patrick William Healy was born in Port Elizabeth, Cape Province. A Porter by occupation, he attested for the South African Overseas Expeditionary Force at Potchefstroom on 3 December 1915, aged 21 years. On his papers he stated he had served 12 months with the P.A. Guards, serving in German West Africa. He was posted to England and thence to France in July 1916. Serving with the 2nd S. A.I. he was awarded the Military Medal in Brigade Orders 110 of 15 May 1917. He was reported as missing on 24 March 1918 and was later confirmed as a prisoner-of-war of the Germans. He was released in January 1919 and was discharged at Maitland, Cape Province on 19 August 1919.
With a presentation silver salver, 26cm., hallmarks for Birmingham 1919, inscribed, ‘Presented to Lance Corpl. P. W. Healy, M.M. by the Citizens of Port Elizabeth for Bravery in carrying despatches under heavy machine fire at Fampoo on the 12th April 1917’. With a letter as a prisoner-of-war, dated 29 October 1918, to ‘Miss Therasa Healy, of No. 9 Dollery Street, Hospital Hill, Port Elizabeth, South Africa’ - in it he reassures her that ‘My wound is quite well now.’ Together with a photograph of Healy wearing his four medals; a 9th Scottish Division slip re his gallant conduct; a Buckingham Palace letter welcoming his release as a prisoner; a Buckingham Palace slip wishing a safe return home; and copied service papers.
